Automatic gear indicator broken :/

While workin on putting in my white guage faces, the string that works the gear indicator came unhooked from somewhere back in the dash. the whole cord is only about a foot long so it cant be too far back.. Anyone know what i gotta do to re attach it?

edit: its a 96 4.0L

Anyone? This is a big issue as i have to tear apart the dash to fix and i was hoping someone could help me out :/
