aux input with factory radio?

ive got a satelite radio in my truck and im getting tired of the fm tuner and how crappy the signal is on some channels. is there a way to wire in an aux input on the back of the radio so i can just plug the sat radio into it or do i have to find myself a cheapy aftermarket deck>

thanks for the reply. a little more than i think its worth, ill probably just end up tossing in an mp3 deck with an aux input into the exploder instead.

Does your HU have cd changer controls? if so you can do the mod for ~10 - 12 USD

Or you can do this for even less:

It's possible to add an aux input to almost any factory stereo, the issue is why would you want to do that? It will involve removing the radio, modding the pre-amp circuit board with extra wiring and possible switching components that will turn off the radio or tape or cd while keeping the amp powered up and that will cause hum problems as well as possibly blowing your stereo. They just were not designed to work that way. Get yourself an aftermarket stereo that fits and has all those options or keep your iPod in your pocket and your headphones turned up!

hmm i was hoping there would be something back there that I would be able to use an adapter to. Maybe I will take it out and have a peak...does anyone have a picture or something of the backplate?

Of your stereo? no how could we? hehe :
check the link to ebay that I posted, look at the adapters and see if your stereo can take one of those

just quit being cheap and buy an aftermarket deck lol, ####### mode off.....

seriously though buying an aftermarket deck is a much better solution because rather than risk frying your stock HU you end up with that left as an extra plus a new deck. you can get a decent one for 126 bucks like my Kenwood. its got AUX input 3 pre out RCA jacks and its very stylish. look on

Over here aftermarket gets stolen, stock ones do not, so for me going aftermarket is not an option..
On my 97 I used the cd changer harness as an input and it works great, I only spent like 10 USD (rca cables + audio switcher)

^ no one will need to steal your stock one when you fry it trying to jimmy rig an aux input. you just dont get an extravagant overly expensive deck and chances are you wont lose it. put insurance on your car for theft protection as well. save your receipts for stuff in your car and you will have your bases covered. rather than fry your stock unit just make it easier on yourself and get a aftermarket.

i was hoping to be able to do what i did with my amp, i tied into the rear speaker wires with one of those rca cable adapter boxes so i could run my amp and sub, was like 20 bucks to convert it and it does the trick

thanks for the link, gonna see whats available, ive been trying to hold out so i could buy a nice double din unit with gps nav and all the other goodies built into it but i just dont wanna spend the 2 grand on the one i like.

Not worth it for me really... I already have that in my insurance, last year they broke a window in my truck, I beleive because I had black tint and they couldn't see inside, maybe they saw something they thought was of value, I lost 1 day of work, half because I couldn't leave with the window busted and all of the glass inside, and the other half on the glass shop my insurance sent me to, plus the ~15dlls fee for something or other that they charge.

When they broke into a previous car that I had they took the HU and bundled all of the wiring together (not sure why, maybe they wanted it to look neatly tucked...) and fried both of my amps, insurance only paid for what was stolen, as they couln't know that the amps were working prior to that or even if those we're installed in the car at the time of the theft

So to each it's own my stereo works very good with the input I hacked in, and it hasn't fried : LOL

Aux mod step by step

I figured that I would make this post and revive this thread since i had found it difficult to do this mod since many of the pictures were too non-existant so I figured that after succesfully completing this mod that I would share my photos of the project and leave it here for future reference.

Let's Get started

So to do this you obviously need a few things

• hot glue gun
• soldering iron
• iron tinner
• flux (if wanted)
• wires small fiberous style (not solid, var. colors)
• wire strippers
• torq wrench unkwn size
• 3.5mm to screw adapter (Or a 3.5mm plug)
• heat shrink for the wires
• cd burner

3.5mm adapter for reference:

1. First you wanna open your radio, this is for the single cd no tapedeck slanted back radio.

2. You want to remove the cd player, careful as there is a ribbon cable connecting it to the radio underneath.

3. What we want to get to is the underside of the cd player chip, the area you are looking for is circled in red.

Here is a close up labelled of the soldering points, for the ground wire I was unsure of the point to solder, I secured mine on the back of the radio with one of the screws. (BE CAREFUL THEY ARE SMALL, YOU WILL NEED A THIRD HAND, IF YOU CROSS CONTACTS BE SURE TO CLEAN FULLY)

4. After soldering secure each wire with a squirt of hot glue. I recommend securing them one at a time since the points are so small they could break off from moving the wire too much.

5. Close the radio back up and route the wires out of the back of the radio near the vehicles antenna port since the hole are already there. Run the wire behind the dash to the location of your choice. I wire mine to appear in a small gap between my center console and dash on the passenger side near the glovebox.

6. Burn yourself a blank cd with silent tracks (1 cd with tracks about 10 or so minutes in length) pop it into your radio and enjoy your new aux cord!
