I've searched the forums and haven't quite found the answer to my problem.

I have a 1998 EB Explorer with the Auto, 4H, 4L dash switch. The car switches into 4H and 4L (I can hear it shift, and the shift light comes on), but the front wheels don't spin.

I was stuck and tried to get it into 4L and I got the 6 flashes and the ABS light came on. After turning off the car and back on, it's back to normal. I've seen different threads with these same issues, but it seems to be back to normal, except for the fact that the front wheels aren't spinning. I'm not getting the flashing lights anymore.

I'm not very handy, so I probably won't be doing the work itself (plus, we have about 3 feet of snow in the driveway), so I'm looking at possible problems and an idea of how much it would be cost to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Get under it and check to make sure it has a front drive shaft. Next I would check all of the connectors. Next I would search for the brown wire mod on here. Locate that wire, and check to make sure it had power going through it.

Ok, a little update:

I took it to a shop, they ran diagnostic test, checked the connections, shift motor and put it up on the lift and they say it works fine. They also test drove it and said the 4wd worked, but it just doesn't seem to be working to me. The back tires still spin, while the front don't.

I honestly know nothing about cars, I can't climb under it, we have around 3 ft of snow, and if I were to look, I wouldn't know what I'm looking at. lol

I guess I'll keep it as is, they ran all the tests they could and couldn't find any problems.

If anybody else has any ideas, let me know.

Thanks!

Here is a good test. Dont do if for too long though.. Go to a parking lot and put it in 4H. Drive straight at a slow speed and then turn the wheel hard to one side while moving. You should feel the front end bucking. If not then your 4WD is not working.
