AWD or 4x4.... Which one is better?

In my search for a 5.0 explorer, I have come to find this to be real "stumper" for me.

1. Which one is better / more reliable, 4x4 or AWD?

2. Which one gets better gas mileage?

you have one choice with the V8....AWD. They dont have 4wd V8s.

What are the pro's/con's of AWD?

Will a V6 get much better MPG??

No, the gas mileage is about the same with the v6 and v8. The V8 tranny is much more reliable and I have never heard of an AWD stystem having problems.

One thing I don't like about the AWD is the lack of a selectable low range. If you won't ever do anything/go anywhere where you'd wish for low range, then it's not an issue.

they do now. there was a thread about the new ex that has some offroad goodies (the NBX) and is offered a V8 with the contoltrac w/ a low range option.

yea, but at the beginning of the thread he was talkin about the 5.0 X, that is what i was talkin about.

you can do stadx2's awd to 4x4 conversion to have the low range.

im fine with my awd, but i dont do any offroading.. itz great in rain and snow.
