I have a 1999 xlt auto-4x4, and when I take off, the left front wheel feels like it is grabbing or trying to engage, shaking the whole truck. after a minute it is fine, and when sits it for a minute or two it will start all over again. i have no idea what it is as this is my first explorer and the first awd I have ever messed with. someone please help!

A vehicle can either be 4x4 or AWD. Not both. Im guessing yours is 4x4 and probably stuck in 4x4.

the select knob says auto 4 hi or 4 low. From what i have read on here it seems to be in the front diff. but I am not sure

Quite right, however 4x4 never really "off" - either Auto or On (i.e. no true 2WD mode unless you do the brown wire mod), so if one of the wheel speed sensors is crapping out, 4WD may be engaging inappropriately.

However, I'm inclined to think the problem is something in the differential or CV axles. Does this happen when you're going straight or turning?

Take a peek at the left CV joints and check the boots for damage.

it happens when I first take off.I can drive about 50yards and it will stop and be fine .But when I let set for a few min. like run inside a store and take off it starts doing it aging.

can you be a little more descriptive when you say it feels like it's "grabbing"?

for instance, do you mean it feels like it has drag (the brakes are stuck on or something is binding or seizing) or do you mean it feels like it's in 4x4 mode (when you go around a turn you feel it) or do you mean it acts as if it's the only tire getting power (it wants to burn out)??
