One thing you may not be aware of is that if you're in an accident, and you don't have insurance. Even if the other guy caused the accident, say he rearends your X, if you don't have insurance, you're automatically at fault. The way the courts look at it is this. If you don't have insurance you shouldn't be on the road, hence if you weren't on the road the accident never would have happened... So with this way of looking at it, you're not only taking the chance that you don't hit someone, but you're also depending on them not to hit you...
And just for an example, my wife and I were rear ended April of 02, I'm still in therapy for my jaw, getting braces later this month and will have various other therapys and Dr's apts for the next 2-3 years, my medical bills are already over 25K, my wife's are over 15K... My wife was in therapy for over 8 months also but she wasn't as bad off as me... My truck was close to 4K in damages, he (I'm guessing here) totaled his dad's 67 Mustang (which was in excellent shape before the wreck from what I could tell)... Also my attorneys are asking for 50K in damages (on top of medical) for the change in our lifestyles, pain and suffering for just my wife... I imagine by the time I'm done they'll be asking for four or five times that ammount... I wasn't sue happy until I saw how much this little accident changed my life... I've been seeing at least one and up to 4 Dr's a week for over a year now!!! That a lot of time away from work, a lot of pain, and a huge dent in my way of life...
Now granted, I won't really see that much money... But can you imagine if a jury said sure give it to him, you'd be talking close to $300,000... Even making $20 an hour (40K a year) that would take a long time to pay off... And if you got insurance my rates wouldn't go up as quick either...
Thanks...
