what do you want to know?

Lower gears are easier to turn (think of a bicycle, low gears you peddle easy to get going but peddle your a$$ off at high speeds) same concept for cars. Low gears push big tires easier, but if you leave tires the same size lower gears will get going easier just run at higher RPMs at highway speeds. Where as high gears will get you lower rpms at highway speeds but require a bit more umph to get the wheels spinning.

High gears = Low number
Low Gears = High Number

Lowest gear in a stock X is 4.10.

accelreation vs. top end

soooo....

So, if I want better acceleration....lower gears (higher number) like the 4.10 would be best.....however that means that I would be running at higher rpms at higway speed and therefor would get lower MPG.

Is that what I am understanding to be true?

Thanks

basically. There are many tradeoffs and pros and cons. It really depends on what you are looking to acheive. You tell us what you are looking to acheive and we can give you a better idea of what you might think about doing.;)

Here is what I want

I want to get 40 mpg
be able to put on 50k miles a year
Out run all the lil rice burner cars running around
and still have room for all my crap and kids and dogs.

That being said.....I am afraid that I will need to pick and choose a little. hahaha.

I am putting on 1k miles a week. 80% of that is on some small country hiways out here that I can drive about 60 mph without getting in trouble.

I like to be able to get up and pass a truck, or launch myself onto the interstate when I need to merge in front of someone...but i dont need a speed demon. I live in Iowa/Nebraska so limited slip would be helpful for snow.

I dont plan on alot of wheeling or anything....for the first few months this is just daily driver for me. Next spring I should be able to move from just daily driver to toy. Even then it wont be a radical change....mild lift and 31-32" tires.

Does that help?

Thanks

From what you said, I'd recommend 4.10s. However, if you have 3.73s stock, stick with those. A small change isn't worth it. I'd only change if you have 3.27s right now.

This just is not going to happen in a 4,000 lb. hunk of metal, one guy on here managed 30 mpg with quite a few mods. Do a search for "my quest for 30" and it should come up. 30 is possible but to get 40...you better start pushing your truck cause that is just not gonna happen while driving. :D :p :D

i know better

I was kidding. I would be happy with 20-25 and a lil extra umph....I am thinking better intake and exaust will be a good place to start.
