Rear axle leak

I have a 99 eddie b. Lately I've noticed somewhat of a grind coming from my rear brakes. I just replaced the brakes about 3 months ago, so I thought they weren't set right. Everything is fine with the brakes, but when I took a look I found some sort of black slug/grease all over the inside of wheel and all over the dust cover. I have no idea what iam going to need to fix it, or what needs to be fixed. I think it's a wheel bearing or seal, I could be wrong.

Axle seal is bad. You need to remove the axle shaft to get to the seal. The Explorer uses a C-clip to retain the axle shaft and it must be removed before the shaft can be pulled. Not a hard job if you have the tools. A Chiltons or Haynes manual wouldn't hurt if it's your first time doing something like that.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164111 - another recent thread on this that goes over it briefly. The Haynes manual actual does a very good job illustarting and describing this (and many other jobs) - well worth the $20. I forgot to mention the C-washers in the other thread - they slide right off like Rick said once you get the lock bolt & pinion shaft out.

Thanks for the info. If there"s anything else I should know before I tackle this project please let me know. Thanks
