Sh***y gas mileage! Please help!

ok I was fine with this for a while but Now I am frustrated with this. I live in tampa FL and go to work every day on ONE single road. the trip is about 4 miles on ONE single road. same thing coming back. sometimes I'll go to a store or something or I drop a friend off or just go to the store. Just by doing that I loose almost a quarter tank of GAS! Now I dont know if this is how the milage is supposed to be but... I think this is VERY ****ty. Especially when I have to put 30 bucks just to fill the tank every time. What are things I should check to see whats causing this? another thing... has anyones explorer ever leaked by where you fuel up? Dead Link Removed

You can notice the trail where the gas goes... sometimes when I drive crazy and I park... it smells like PURE raw gas... but not always...

Fix any leaks, do any scheduled maintainence that you haven't done, and at least try and watch your language on the thread name;) Geez.

pic

heres a pic of my explorer which has its lil problems. Nothing big... once again... copy the link to your browser...

Does it leak only when its near full or does it leak all the time?

How many miles can you go on a tank? You should get around 15mpg in the city on an ohv, do you know what type of gears you have?

Leaks near full and it gets around 150 miles a tank... give or take a lil... and I drive at a steady 1800 RPM's at 45 mph

Look at these pics I just took... hehe... how does the condition of it look? ok? messed up?

Are you getting any check engine lights?Sounds like your fuel neck is leaking:(

If you only drive very short trips and don't get the engine up to an efficient operating temperature, your mileage will suck. Also, 1800 rpms is not the most efficient engine speed, 2200-2500 usually is for the Explorer.

As for the leak, can't tell without a working picture (and yes I've tried to get it to work). There may be something wrong with the fuel system or the motor, but without further info, that's my take on the matter.

Does your thermostat move out of the cold area at all:D

Alecs right, your mileage will drop big time if you only drive short trips and don't give the engine a chance to get to its operating temp.

I get crappy mileage in the 5.0 Mounty if I drive conservitively (like you were around 1800rpms) yet when I floor it everyday or drive harder I get better mileage, I'm happy about that:D

hmmm... sounds like the two times my overdrive went out. High RPM and enormous gas consumption.

4 miles is barely enough time to warm up the engine. You will probably see excessive carbon build up in the engine and possible on the throttle body.

But I would say fixing the gas leak would be a good start. The gas splashes around a lot.
