mine used to do that all the time early in the morning. have you had that recall done to your car where they replaced both your upper and lower intake manifold gaskets?
Good chance your IAC (Idle air control) valve is acting up. It's job is to control air flow at idle, especially when the engine is cold. Common problem. Sometimes it can be cleaned to fix the problem, other times it just needs to be replace.
BTW, Ford never put a 4.8 in an Explorer. In 2000 you could only get a 4.0 or a 5.0 (only AWD)
oops. thanks info on engine size. the truck isnt mine auctually, its a guy i knows and thats the info he gave me. he said it was a v6 so im imagining its a 4.0
