Got the tranny rebuilt a few weeks ago, and its already gone bad. Its in much worse condition than before the rebuild. I wanted to get some idea of what might be wrong before I bring it back to the shop. Symptoms are:

1 Whiny torque converter from the beginning, but the shop said that was "normal".

2 When coasting downhill, if I put in neutral the rpms don't go down to idle. Stays around 1600rpm. (Like the torque converter is not unlocking.)

3 Yesterday while climbing a pretty good mountain, it started shifting really rough, jerking the truck.

4 Now when it shifts into 3rd gear it pounds pretty hard and I can hear some loud whining sound while it's finding the right gear.

5 Seems like it has no power at all.

I'm planning to drive it to the shop only because it seems bad enough that I wouldn't consider it a drivable vehicle. I don't think they will give me any trouble about the warranty, I just want to know what's going on so I can have confidence I won't have trouble with it again in the future. I'm tempted to ask to be present when they tear it down again.

Can't comment about anything other than item #2.

This is normal. For some reason, the RPM's don't drop when coasting in neutral. Mine has been that way since I bought it with 58000 miles and it now has 136000.

Shifting hard could be a programming issue. maybe resetting the ECM/PCM would help.

first of all who did the rebuild? second it doesnt seem like they did anything to it at all.. a rebuild should feel brand new thats why you paid crazy amounts im sure to have it rebuilt.. i wouldnt be afraid to walk in there and tell them they screwed up... even if it was something else causing a problem like say the torque converter it would take more than a few weeks for the problem to come back i would think.... i dont think its anything wrong but a bad rebuild.. just my opinion tho

I "think" this place has a good reputation, but with transmissions, I'm always very suspicious. For all I know, they may have just swapped in a boneyard tranny and told me they rebuilt mine. Seems really odd that I would have performance and noise issues that didn't exist before the rebuild. This tranny wasn't really that bad. It was starting to show signs of the servo bore issue, and had 148k on it, but was working really well. I decided it would be good insurance to utilize my extended warranty and get it rebuilt just so I could have peace of mind for a few years.

If you were lied to as you suggest may have happened, the repair place surely is in line to suffer a reputation failure! imp
