Bad Trany Signs? Overdrive definition?

What are the signs of a bad tranny or does it just fail? What exactely is overdrive?

normally there is noticeable slipping and or loss of overdrive.. also the tranny light might be blinking as well..... basically if it ever gets to any of those points, you are screwed and need a rebuild

Ironically, mine didn't give much warning. It just went. But this is not typical.

Jimabena (sp?) is correct. They usually go out over time. Check your dipstick. If the fluid is dark and smells burnt, its probably toasted.

I have had parts just snap though. My old A4LD went "bang" one day and never moved again.

What exactely is overdrive?

any gear ratio below 1.00 .. for exampl 0.75 .. which ends up saving u gas since technically ur engine doesnt have to do as many revolutions per minute for any given speed once ur vehicle is in overdrive.
