I'm thinking it's going to be some ugly and uneven stamped plastic under the caps. My take is to rig up something that will screw into the holes where the inside bed hooks and/or tonneau cover screws are.
Part of what I do is window cleaning and I just tie down my extension ladder to the factory roof rails. A jet ski tiedown on each rail and a bungee cord or two on the side rail to keep it from shifting around. That said, my ladder is only 18' and I don't carry it around every day.
