I'm trying to pull an engine out of an '02 Explorer V6 4x4 XLS. For some reason I can't seem to get it to pull apart from the transmission. How many bell housing bolts are there with that transmission?

I pulled 7 bolts. Two on the bottom in the 5 & 7 positions(clock) two on the sides in the 3 & 9 spots, two up high in the 10 and 2 positions and one in the very top in the middle at 12.

If I'm missing one or I missed something please let me know. Oh, and I did disconnect the torque converter bolts.

Thanks :)

Come on guys, I have to head back into the garage in a few hours and I need a plan of attack.

Can anybody tell me how many bell housing bolts? Is there any other kind of holding mechanism on these? Do the torque converter studs usually hang up?

I assume that the starter bolts were pulled when the torque converter nuts were removed. Here's a drawing of the 5R55W transmission:

My starter is on the driver's side. Is there a possibility that I have a different transmission, or is the drawing wrong?

Here's a link to what mine looks like. It says its a 5r55w but the bell housing looks much different from the one in the picture above. I can't really see how many holes are at the top of the bell housing.

The picture was only a drawing, and not an actual snap shot, so you have the same one as the picture in the EBay link. Use the drawing as a reference, and count the holes in the picture. Compare it to your transmission, but just invert the pocket for the starter. I wonder if the bell housing with the pocket on the opposite side is for the UK version since many parts are on the opposite side (steering column, brake booster, master cylinder, etc)?

I thought there were 8 bolts. This is a 5r55e, but it should be the same bolt pattern.

Well, I finally got it. It was the one in the top left corner of the picture above. since it sits in that nitch its very hard to see.

The engine is now out and now I can start messing with my timing chains.

Thanks for the help :D
