You mean teh rubber serpentine belt, not he timing chain, correct?

Sounds to me like your tensioner pulley is failing, replacement is about $20 and is simple bolt on.

Do a searhc for tensioner pulley.

If you drive it like this it will fail and you will be stuck.
:)

Jamie - could it possibly be the idler pulley? I had the same symptoms he was describing until the bearings in my idler pulley seized

Easy fix if thats the case. Only takes a few minutes and a $20 idler pulley from the auto parts store.

it is the main belt, and where its making the noise is under the front right of the engine if you are looking straignt on

yeah sorry guys it could be either pulley, however the good news is on the OHV 4.0L, both the tensioner and idler are the same pulley and bearing.
I replaced both from Carquest, cheap.
If you are really cheap you can just replace the bearing, pull your pulley off, get the number of fthe bearing and go buy a replacement.
A stethascope (like a doctor) is a good way to pinpoint which pulley is makeing the noise, but if you have metal shavings time is SHORT.

are we talking aboyut the same part?

Help!

It is the end metal piece of the A/C compressor. It is the metal circle about the diameter of a CD. When I turn on the A/C, the sound goes away, but the compressor does not sound good and there is no real cold air.

the A/C clutch is where the noise is coming from and the metal shavings are?

Time for a new compressor and/or clutch
This will require evacuation of the a/c system and re-fill.
or you can get a non A/C belt and bypass the compressor, but you will ahve no A/C

The metal piece appears to be loose and thats where the noise is....you can tap the plate and see it.

same thing you talking about?

that is the compressor clutch.
are there metal shavings?

the clutch connects the pulley to the compressor when you turn the A/c on, otherwise it just spins freely. Sounds to me like you ahve a bad A/C compressor CLUTCH

You can get it rebuilt or swap it out, try the yellow pages under auto - A/C

There a no metal shavings...Is it ok to drive as long as I dont turn on the A/C?

my a/c compressor locked up after a while of skreetching <sp> noise....if your not really worried about having a/c if and when it goes out, you can buy a belt for a non a/c system. thats what i did

if its making a noise it will eventually freeze up, so you can wait for it to freeze up, repair it now, or get a non ac belt, about $35

Excellent suggestion 410Fortune. By using a non-A/C drivebelt, the X can still be driven without fear.

But continuing to drive it with the noise will almost assuredly leave you stranded somewhere when the bearing siezes, which is guaranteed to destroy the drivebelt.

Thanks for the help fella's

no problem 50, now send me your new CD! hahahaha just kidding...

Let us know how it works out
