now granted this took a few hours with a dremel tool and some cutting bits to get it right but this was a lot of bang for the buck !

I ran the truck with the top of the stock air box on and off and the sound is a little louder off (more so in high rpms) but it seems stronger and acceleration smoother with the top still on. I also modified the stock cold air intake inside the bottom of the air box by opening it up alot (cut out the narrow section) and then pulling the rubber intake tube through the front hole behind the grill to ensure it's only getting all outside air only. I had to pull the bolts from the coolant resivoir and move it over to get my hands in there to do it.

Honestly I don't see how a K&N intake can be any better the truck really pulls harder and smoother with this modification. I haven't had it on long enough to tell about any gas mileage changes. It seemed about the same but I was getting on it alot to hear that nice deep engine sound.

Spectre cotton reusable / washable / oil type air filter $25 from Autozone.

cut MAF off the stock air box

trimmed it up some (I stuffed the MAF with papertowels to protect the electronics from any debris. Some might want to go ahead and temporarily remove the electronics (sensor).

cleaned it up

with the air box top on...now to do it again I would try to remove less plastic from the top but the MAF actually goes in pretty high and if not cut more at the bottom of the air box the air filter would be hitting the top of the inside of the air box and therefore wouldn't fit.

material removed from the bottom of the air box so the air filter fits inside the stock air box. Here you can also tell where I removed the narrow (flat) section of the stock cold air inlet. Those interested would just have to look at the stock piece and compare it to this picture and you can tell what I did.
