If you went to a Ford dealer you would get Mercon V, which is mostly synthetic. It is a replacement for original Mercon.

For that year anything that meets a mercon spec will suffice, depends on your budget. I personally use Mercon V, best price/performance compromise.

RP and Amsoil are also very good, but a bit pricey.

Best oil

Thanks.

With all the problems with explorer transmissions dont use a cheap fluid spend the extra money on somthing really good and change it often. my 2cents

IMO, any high dollar synthetic fluid used will be paid for in better fuel economy. Others have changed all fluids to Amsoil etc, and gained a lot in efficiency. Regards,

I use Amsoil ATF ( Dead Link Removed ) and highly recommend it.

synthetic

i changed all my fluids over to synthetic one at a time, as they became due.

i have castrol syntech in the engine oil, mobil 1 synthetic in the diffs, amsoil synthetic ATF in the power steering and transimission ,and mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the transfer case... i didnt notice any change in idle/performance when changing anything over to synthetic EXCEPT the transmission. shifts are smoother and quieter now.

Thanks.I just wanted to know what i should put in the trans as it is due,I'll look for the Amsoil.

Buy the Amsoil by the gallon, or 2.5 gallon size if possible.
