The OEM brands don't make their own parts, at least not most of them. They contract it out to companies and tell them what they want made. Then slap their name on it.

just don't get champions, and don't waste your money on bosch plat 4 and 2, and splitfires, and crap like that

when it comes down to it most spark plugs are created equal

If all of these split and multiple electrode plugs were so great, why aren't they being used in new cars? Think about it....

no to mention race cars, go to a local round track or drag strip and see how many people run platinum plugs lol, not very many

Well I'd imagine that racers wouldn't be using platinum plugs because they're designed as a longer lasting plug. I'd assume that racers would be running copper plugs or something of that type.

There really is no need to put platinum plugs in these vehicles, there is no benefit. I would put good ol' motor craft plugs, or autolite, those are both ford plugs, if you want to call them that. The aerostar will actually call for platinum, I don't know why, but Ford has a reason I'm sure.

I just put E3 plugs in my 4.0 OHV with borg warner wires and notice a pretty good improvement over the old ones, granted who knows how long the old setup was in the truck but I did notice a seat of the pants improvement with the E3's.

I think in my previous 92 explorer, I think I installed autolite spark plugs and they seemed to work good, seemed to give it a little bit more pep but not much more than the previous plugs but still the truck ran great with those plugs.

Is there a set for the 1st Gen 4.0L pushrod? I can only find single ones - AGSF42FM.

Huh! The part number for the double platinums is AGSF42PP. But I just did some looking myself and it appears Motorcraft no longer makes them. I'm not sure why. I thought the whole point of having platinum on both electrodes was because the outer electrode gets eroded on one plug, while the central electrode erodes on the other plug as the plugs in each bank receive sparks of opposite polarity.

I did see Autolite is still selling double platinum plugs: APP765. This has me wondering if Autolite might now be the plug of choice.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Yup. That's what I discovered when I searched for the original part number when I bought the Explorer. Turns out AGSF42PP has been superseded by AGSF42FM. I saw somewhere AGSF42FM was single platinum. I've never had platinum plugs so I don't know if it's a single or double. :o

Plats are a huge waste oh money.
Their only benefit is that they last longer between plug changes.
No need to waste money on the plats.
I guess i'll go with the Autolites. I use them in my 98 Cobra and it runs like a raped ape.

How is it a waste of money when they are designed exactly what you just said -- to last longer?? Longevity is vital to a DD, which is what most of us 1st gen owners are using them for.

^^^
They offer NO performance gain whatsoever. People are always talking bout how much better the car feels with plat plugs.
It's all bs.

As long as you change your plugs every 30k or so, then no need for plats.
Plats are meant to go for 100k or so. There's NO WAY I'd leave any plugs in any of my cars for 100k

While true, you must either be a glutton for punishment or you've never had to change the rear plug on the passenger side. My experience has shown Motorcraft double platinums easily last the rated 100K. My last set went 118,000 miles before I saw any performance deterioration. So like Al, I'm curious about why you fear anything that lasts more than 30K.

Obviously long life is a plus to me. Which leads me back to the question: Now that Ford has stopped making the Double Platinum plug, what's the best option?
