Blend door or actuator itself?

How do you know if its the blend door or the actuator itself that needs to be replaced? My vehicle only blows cold air and if try to turn the heat on it makes a clicking sound like a broken record. This all started a couple of months ago. It would make the clicking sound and not work but if I turned the fan up to four it would make a loud thunk sound and start working. Now that is no longer the case and it's out completely. I just don't wanna spend the money if it is just the door.
