Before i got my Fosgate i used to have a 2002 Crunch Blackmaxx 1000 watt, 2 channel amp. It pushed my 12's pretty nice-nothing spectacular-when i got my new amp i sold the Crunch to a friend-he was powering one 12" MTX Thunder 8000 with the amp-i talked to him today at school and he told me that the amp will work at low volume but when he turns it up the amp goes into "protect" mode-he said he took it to a shop and they said he blew a voice coil. Anyone got any ideas? If the voice coil is blown-can/do i replace it or trash it?

bump-anyone have any knowledge on the subject?

no one?

they checked the amp's voice coil?? Or did you mean the sub's;) . I don't think theres anything you can do if you blew a coil, but I'm not sure. I would rather just buy another sub.

I only blew my three MTX 10's once, but that was b/c I have an MTX amp pushing 700 watts rms and was messing with it one day and turned both gains all the way up when I thought I was turning them down, kept it like that for about a year.. wondered why it was so freaken loud:D took a year to blow them though with both gains turned up on that powerful amp. They were replaced uder warrenty.

no i was referring to the amp-sorry if that wasn't clear.

oh ya and i was looking at the warranty of my amp and Crunch doesn't cover blown voice coils. I was just wondering if i could take it to a local shop and maybe THEY could fix it for a reasonable price and then i would just sell it.

No , a speaker voice coil can not be replaced.

wait..are you still talking about a voice coil in an amp?

or did you mean sub again......

If it's a blown coil, like I said before, unfortunetley theres nothing to do. Tell you friends to go pick up some Audiobahn Q series:D

ok let's start over-my friend took this AMP to a shop since it was working on low volume but when he turned it up the AMP went to "protect" mode-they said that there was a blown coil in the amp. Can this be replaced or do i just throw the AMP away?
-Don't mean to be rude but i just wanted to make sure we were "on the same page" :D

ahhhh, it kept sounding like you were talking about a voice coil, thats why I was like "voice coil in an amp?":o

If it was like a regular power coil inside the amp it should be replaceable, I know everything on my amps is covered from resistors to the motherboard no matter if it was my fault that anything happened, both are MTX amps which are high quality and reliable, I've been running over 1100 watts for 3 years with only one problem on my sub amp (mtx 2300x: 700 watts rms) and that was something that had come loose on the board. Crunch isn't exactly a good brand known for quality, maybe thats why they don't cover some stuff knowing it'll fail. If you can't get them to replace/fix it, I would start looking at better stuff if you don't mind spending the money like MTX, Audiobahn, Xtant, Alpine ect ect., they'll put out a lot more power reliably and efficiently.

ok well just for the record-i am running 2 Fosgate amps-very happy with those-as i stated before however, the Crunch amp was my very first amp (i got it cheap), then i started upgrading (Fosgate) so i sold the Crunch to my friend-who told me about the problem with the power coil-i was just trying to get some info on what i could do to fix/replace his amp.
-How much do you think it would be to get the coil replaced? (just a ballpark-i know all shops are different)

not really sure, if it's out of warrenty, they might try to charge a lot for it so.....I guess go to a couple shops and get estimates.

One of the channels could be fried.I used to have a old crossfire amp that used to do the same thing.Tell your friend to put his worries behind him and buy my orion extreme amp:D

dont think it will be worth it to repair that amp shop will probably charge ya an arm and a leg.... but if youre game you could always go to radio shack and try to find the part that blown and repair it yourself (your friend i guess)

Go to the zeb.com, or tell him to go there and pick up a real 300+Watt Audiobahn amp for under $200

thats where i got the Crunch from-thezeb.com-2002 model Crunch Blackmaxx it said 1,000 watts-but i took it to a shop and it was only pushing around 750 max. All in all not a bad amp. If i do go to radio shack like "davesexplorer" said would i just have to solder the piece back in? Honestly though if it's that much trouble i'll just trash it.
