Broken coil springs, need help!

I have a '02 Explorer XLT. I just noticed the driver's side rear coil is broken. I am pretty mechanical, but I can always use and appreciate advice. What do I need to take off to replace them? Can I just jack up the rear control arm, remove the 3 13mm upper strut mount bolts and lower the arm to get the spring out, or do I have to undo the control arm?
Any advice appreciated (especially with pics! lol)

unless your buying quick struts from monroe you're gonna need a spring compressor first. that lower arm has to drop down a ways to get that strut out. it's a pretty basic r&r.

I too have the same problem, on the driver side rear coil! I just bought my 02 and noticed it while doing brake work. Odd thing is it doesnt sag or handle weird. It looks as if the top 2 coils broke out and are sandwiched in between the 3 and 4 coil. Ive never seen a broken coil spring on such a new and light vehicle! And its odd that its the same side.
Metal defect maybe? Since it doesnt affect my handling i aint worried bout it. I know where a parts explorer is i mite investigate.

I recently noticed on my 2002 EB has a broken spring on the rear passenger side a few months ago while doing brake work. It is like the second down from top.

seems like the '02's are looking for Monroe Ready Struts, it come with spring and shock. I'd do them in pairs. From what i have read, in '02 they weren't coated properly and thus rusted.

Yeah, my drivers rear coil, the broke one, has little remaining coating. Whats there is loose and breaks away easily. Either way the coil metal shouldnt break! I mean there are coil springs 40+ yrs old worn and sagging that dont break. Poor quality materials i believe. And on such a critical part....
