I have 2 that are snapped off at the head and my 91 is running poorly.

Can I get them at my local Ace hardware or are they dealer or auto-parts store only?

Searching the forum did not produce the answer I was looking for.

You have to get them out. There is no other way around it. Unless you replace the head. Once you get them out, remove another so you can use it to find replacements.

If there is enough left above the deck, you can tack weld a nut to it's shaft and maybe get it out. That's the best way really. I have never had luck with the extractors. Even the ones from SnapOn suck.

TY Tweaked.

Getting them out won't be an issue, just an annoyance and a bit of elbow grease.

I really just wanted to know if the bolts are special, like the head bolts, or a simple bolt that I can find at any hardware store. I don't want to tear down the head prematurely without knowing which way I need to go. I live in a rural area and if I have to order parts that often takes a week or more to arrive.

Their not special, metric but not special

TY JD4242 - that is what I wanted to hear. Life is much better know!

I'm not sure of the strength. If they are not high grade and that's what you replace them with, you run the risk of over tightening and stripping out the head/block. As long as you use a torque wrench you should be good. Also, use anti-seize on all of them.

TY for the advice Tweaked, I got some grade 5 bolts, should be sufficient I think. And I use anti-seize on most nuts and bolts, makes all the difference in the world. I'm replacing a head, well both of them, and going with 95tm heads. The bolts that busted ended up having a nub exposed once I lifted the intake off, so it would not have been so tough to get them out if I didn't have a bad head. Cracked in the usual spot - wonder if my perpetually loose intake contributed to the head failing?

Broken in the usual spot? What usual spot?

/sorry

Cylinder 5, btw valves...seems to be the common place for the head to crack...according to this forum's users.
