95 Ranger
Hey,
The brand new Warn manual locking hubs that I put on broke. I need to know if there is something wrong with my truck or my hub.

I just bought a 95 Ranger that came with the Automatic locking hubs already taken off, but no manual hubs installed. I got the spindle nut conversion kit and put on the manual locking hubs.
I literally had not driven 3 feet when the driver's side hub broke. about a third of it just busted off the end!
The parts store has offered to replace it on warranty but I'm nervous that it is something wrong with my 4x4 and that it will just break the new ones. I'm a student with four kids and I can't afford to pay for a second set of these. The guy I bought it from has consistently lied to me (even after purchase) so he is no help at all.

Have you ever seen this before? Is there any way that the problem is my truck and not faulty hubs?

Thank you so much for your help!

Warns do have a limited lifetime warranty. If all else fails, try contacting Warn directly to find you a vendor to get it replaced.

They are going to replace it. That is not the problem. My concern is that my truck will just break it again and I'll be responsible for 2 of them.

looks like it is locked,

were you turning on pavement when it broke ?

I was turning on pavement when it broke. That's how I figured I would know if it was working. but the very first 'lurch' it popped!

4x4 on pavement leads to breaking things.. the hub is the fuse in the drive train. Its supposed to break first so things that are harder to replace don't break.

In short: Do not run 4x4 (with hubs locked) on high traction ground (even wet roads from rain).

wow... simple as that huh?
I feel a little dumb now. Glad they are replacing it, and I guess I'll smarten up.

thanks.

Having driven it on pavement shouldn't pop it THAT quick unless you got something crazy like 40" tires on it (after time it can fatigue parts, but not immediately like that).

Post up some more pics as well as a pic of your rotor and spindle nuts where the hub goes over. Maybe there's another issue there that caused it to bind up and break?

It would take some time, but if you took a sequence of photos or layed all the parts out listed in the order that they're installed or taken off. Might have to do the other side also. I've driven mine on pavement many times, especially this time of the year when I'm out hunting and all the time going from trails to pavement with 35s. Done that with a D35 and now D44.

I got new ones on warranty, threw 'em on and drove away. they seem to be working fine. I think it was just a faulty hub.

Probably just a faulty casting. When Holley first came out with their Off Road carb they had a bad batch of casting problems. It would seep out white powdery crap on the inside of the fuel bowls. I had a terrible time keeping the jets clean. But they recalled all those carbs and have never had a problem since.
If it was a bad cast, I bet there's more out there that's had the same problem.
Bet you were nervous the first couple of feet when you did your first drive?

I was crazy nervous! but everything else seemed to be fine, so I went with it.
I'm still a little jumpy with them. but they got me out through the snow and I got my Deer yesterday so I'm happy as can be!
