I just gotta get this of my chest. I come here everyday, and see time after time. "Do a search to find what ya need!" I moderate a Duckhunting site, and we never treat prople this way, or for that matter, any other site I see. There are such things as new people, or people not knowing a Mod or anything else may not exsist. I have tried the search feature , and to tell you the truth, found it very vauge to say the least. If ya don't wanna answer a question, then Hell, don't click on it, or better yet, never reply. I'm sure there are people such as me who love to answer al the questions, even over and over again.

this topics been covered do a search

This is probably gonna get me black balled on this site and I'll probably never get another one of my questions anwsered. But I agree. I was once a mod on a Honda board and I've never seen so many people be told to search. Just anwser the damn question, or ignore the post!!

The problem with that reasoning is 2 things.
1.Wasting Space/Bandwidth on Server
2.Cluttering up the "active" threads at the top of the list for something that has already been discussed. Ya know, like real threads that are important and are actively discussed like "projector beam headlamp mods" instead of boring threads like "slip yoke lubing".

I have to agree... yes the search can be helpful, but it can also be very frustrating. Even if you know a topic exists it may be next to impossible to find the darn thing.

Besides without newbies asking questions how will we ever be able to meet them and draw them into the board? Do we really want people to just search and leave?

Or a very important topic like a do it yourself guide to pecker piercing.

well rick at least this wonderfull site has the information if i should feel so inclined (there is not enough jim beam or johnny walker in the world to get me drunk enough to do that by the way!)

still havent ben able to find a really good thread on changing my blinker fluid. maybe ya could point me in the right direction. :D

Yes, the search is very useful, I have used it many times. But like Rick said, it can be very frustrating. I just did a search on driveshafts, and got 806 results. I read as many as I could before giving up and posting the question anyway.

I know we have all typed the same answers many times, but does it really hurt you to do so? It doesn't bother me, and I try to answer any question I can, even if it has been covered. If it's a really long post, I'll post th link to one of the original threads for clarification.

I agree with BAYDOG. As to those that are concerned about wasted server space, just take a read of some of the dumb threads that are started by people that probably do searches before they post. That seems to be a bigger problem than people asking legitimate questions.

When you register to become a member of this forum, you are supposed to read the rules first. One of the rules clearly states to search for your answer before you start a new thread and ask. I completely understand starting a thread if the subject is of a lingo that a member doesn't understand, therefore it makes it real difficult to search. But, a thread started on "What is my bolt pattern on my Explorer?" is just silly and proves that the newbie didn't read the rules of the forum and search for their answer first. Hell, I was quick with a semi-newbie tonight when they asked "How Do I Lower My 98?" A search would have explained everything real quick. I have had a few problems with my X's over the time that I have been here, very few of which I have ever had to post about, because I did a search and found all the info I needed. And yes, there are a BUNCH of pointless threads out there made by experienced members which waste a lot more space than all the typical newbie questions combined. But IMO these come from knowledgable (I use that term loosely) members who spend a lot of time here and need some pointless threads to occupy their time between lending theri experience in more important threads. These seemingly pointless threads keep the group together by entertaining them while they wait to spread their knowledge.

OK, I'm rambling. Let me see if I can make a point here. Yes, sometimes members get a bit rude and quick with newbies that ask stupid questions, sometimes that is deserved, sometimes it isn't. For a lot of the members of this board, this forum is part of their lives and sometimes they are in a short, rude mood. With some restraint, it should be easy to ignore these newbie posts, but sometimes it is just aggravating when they don't follow the rules.

I think I should go now

That was a loaded example Morrisey:p You posted about the bolt pattern. A search for bolt pattern brings up over 500 hits. I found the answer in the last post of the second thread I looked in.

That was pretty lucky.

In any case, there is no reason to get pissed at someone for not searching or not finding if they do search.

Yeah! And Rick's the boss, so I agree with him!

Just Kidding!!!!:D

btw: I joined a mx6 site once to help diagnose an ignition problem on a friend's car. within 10 minutes of posting the problem, I had 8 VERY RUDE replies. apparently, it was a very typical mx6 problem and I hadn't searched for it. the replies I got were MUCH ruder than anything I have seen posted on this forum

Rick's the boss, if he's willing to put up with it so should the rest of us. I for one am more tired of seeing "use the search" replies than I am tired of seeing the 100th request for a given topic by a "newbie".

If I remember part of the thread, I will try and do the search for the "newbie" with the link to the thread I had in mind sometimes accompanied by "use the search". I won't be a dick though by only replying "use the search". That wastes just as much bandwidth as the original question did and serves no useful purpose other than to possibly upset the person asking the question.

ha.. you think this site has some mean people on it... look how they treat each other on the goped forum i belong too... swearing every other word in most threads... people saying your an idiot..search you POS... its bad www.gopednation.com

faulty ignitor in the distributor of a 93-94 mx6. heat causes it to shut the engine off completely (like someone turned off the key) even at highway speeds. as the problem gets worse, the vehicle becomes harder to start and wont start until it cools down.
come on morrisey. even i knew that. you should've searched:p. just kidding.

i was actually just talking about this in another thread. we shouldnt be so hard on newbies. especially since most wouldnt even know what to search for if they never heard of something

I tried to do a search for this, but I didn't know what to search for. :D

Seriously, I have done some searches and didn't find what I was looking for because not everyone uses the "correct" terminology for everything.

To illustrate my point, if I search this thread using a keyword "name" but I only used "terminology" in this post, then I wouldn't find this post in a search.

Also, I agree with DocVijay: Sometimes you get hundreds of hits and read a bunch of them without really finding what you are looking for.

Also, I got thrashed once because I asked if anyone knew about any other sources for information on a topic. I was thinking along the lines of manuals, websites, books that would explain the topic. The person assumed that I had not searched for it, but I actually was looking for more technical information than I found in the search

"i....am all.....that is man"

Yet ANOTHER reason to keep the sig's under 6 lines LOL:D

Any time I run into a problem with the X, I run a search, and only if I can't find a clear answer, do I post my problem. I like replying to peoples questions, but I usually do a search for them to point them in the right direction at least, I don't post an answer like" Um, search first dum dum".

I only tell people to run a search, and give no answer at the same time if it is about "What tires fit my X"....That is the only beaten to death one IMO.:)

Now the search is a pain sometimes too, I tried to find the "This could be fun" thread, and "The one word" threads for someone else, but I only found them by remembering the exact thread tiltles from 6 months ago :(

If Rick himself approves of questions by newbies, then it is still fine by me:D
