I tried to run the Crown King Trail today which is an easy run with a few challenging spots to play in. On the first obstacle I heard a noise like the leaf springs had shifted. I disregarded the noise and went on. On the next obstacle I heard the same noise... well this time I got under the truck to take a look.

Busted the main leaf on the passenger side! The leaf busted right in front of the spring mounting plate. Luckily I have military wrapped springs and I was able to drive back home on the secondary spring. We did turn around though since we were much less than half way through the trail.

I'm not sure when the spring broke. Before we left the house today I pointed out to Char how much the truck was sagging to the right. I just though the leafs had lost their arch,

Anyway, this was a great demonstration of just how valuable military wrap springs can be.

Rick,
For the leaf spring idiots (myself included), could you explain what a military wrap spring is. And where such things could be found.

Thanks

Robb

Ha Ha!! Sorry Rick just had to say it.:D

I broke my main leaf a couple of weeks ago and sucked limping home. I had to use a come-along and two pairs of vise grips. Very slow drive.

The "military wrap" leaf uses a secondary leaf that has the end "wraped" around the eye of the main leaf. Its purpose is to do exactly what Rick's did (keep the leaf spring from commong apart is the case of a main leaf failure. Several aftermarlet leafs are built this way. Here is a pick of OME's:

I busted a F350 main leaf once, just stuck a block of wood in between the diff and frame and held it inplace with a boomer aka load binder and limped home with 2 and a half cords of wet birch wood on the deck......now that was a bumpy ride. glad to hear no one was hurt rick, u gonna do coils in the rear?

No coil overs yet... Just going to fix what I have for now.
