I am probably buying a 1997 Eddie Bauer Explorer tomorrow, and would like a carfax on it. I don't know much about that stuff, can anyone run one for me ? I've been looking at this site as I check into Explorer's, adn have pretty much decided I am going to buy this one, but it struck me that I've heard of cafax but never had one done. Any help ?

I ran the free part for you, you can run the part where you have to pay: http://www.carfax.com/

I will warn you: Before I bought my Explorer, I ran a carfax on it. It said that there were 2 records in their database. Of course I wanted to know what they said, so I paid the $20. I found out that it was first registered in 97 and the registration was renewed in 98. BFD.

there were a ton of records on mine... like 8..... when a friend had carfax the full version, i ran it.... all it basically said was it was registered to a ford dealer... then to a bank... then as a vehicle for road use... then to the previous owner then to my parents than to me.... it said nothing about the accidents it was in.... my truck has been rolled 2 different times and has been in 3 fender benders and totalled one other time... none of those accidents ever showed up on the carfax report....

carfax

Thanks, guys...anybody have a full membership or whatever so they can run a full report for me ?

Nothing weird on a full check - I would have my insurance agent run it for me if I were you - they can tell you every time it was involved in anything that caused a claim to be filed.

Carfax did alert me that I had been wrongly told that a car had 44,700 miles when it actually had 144,700 miles.

Hope this helps.

I ran an ISO claimsearch on the VIN # and it came up clean also. There were no insurance claims ever filed on this vehicle. Hope this helps.

Don't put too much stock in Carfax. I work in a collision repair shop and did a search on a car with $5,000.00 in damage reapired. No mention of it on Carfax.
The best tips is take it to an independant mechanic and an independant body shop. Have them give it a good look see.

carfax

Actually, I work on cars (mainly Mustangs) and looked it over pretty good. I was mainly looking to see if it had had any serious mechanical problems or recalls that the dealer had taken care of, and what had happened mileage/owner wise. Thanks for all the info...

Try asking a local dealership if they'll pull OASIS for you. It should show any warranty or service work done at a Ford dealership.

hmmm... so it has been in a collision but how bad. I knew it was sort of hit because the front bumper has about a 2 inch dent in it, on the left side and the left front fender has a smaller dent in it too.. but its nothing bad at all. can anyone tell me if that is bad? thanks.

Sorry, that's all the info I can get...you could try calling the insurance company (allstate) the number is in my previous post.

They may or may not give you information. Good Luck!!

I think the only time Car-Fax will show a vehicle being in a wreck is if it has been totaled.

I know I have looked at cars that have been fixed and they don't show up anything. The only thing it will show is who has bought it then tell you what the mileage was at that time. Don't waste your time with it, just check the vehicle out or like someone else said take it to a shop and have them look at it for you.

Back in November, 2000 I ran a Carfax report on three company vans that I used to own. Here is the type of information that gets reported:

1992 Dodge Caravan (the 7 freebe scans were clear)
4/11/94 no mileage; Title Issued; Maumee, OH (includes title #) this was when I traded it in for my next van.
6/13/94 70,402; Title issued, Mobile, AL, (includes title #)
8/3/94 71,844; Title issured, first lean reported; Mobile, AL (includes title #)
6/22/95 84,847; Title issued, Swanton, OH (includes title #)
7/11/97 no mileage; Accident report, vehcile involved in crash with a parked motor vehicle, Swanton, OH (includes case #)

1994 Dodge Caravan (the 7 freebe scans were clear)
3/14/94 20; Title issued; Hunt Valley, MD (includes title #)
8/14/95 63,056; Title issued, Youngstown, OH (this is when I got rid of it)
8/28/95 63,506; Title issued, first lean reported, Youngstown, OH (includes title #)
3/29/97 no mileage; Accident reported, vehicle involved in crash with another motor vehicle; Hamilton, OH (includes case #)

1995 Chevy Astro (the 7 freebe scans were clear)
7/1/95 no mileage; Registered as commercial lease vehicle, Toledo, OH
7/12/95 20; Title issued, first lean reported; Hunt Valley, MD (includes title #)
10/31/96 56,102; Title issued, Cleveland, OH (this is when I got rid of it)
11/1/96 56,689; Vehicle sold; auto auction, Eastern Region
3/5/97 no mileage; Title issued, first lean reported; Flushing, NY
2/6/99 74,676; Passed emissions inspection, passed safety inspection, New York City Area
12/10/99 80,786; Passed emissions inspection, passed safety inspection, New York City Area
12/22/99 no mileage; Service Contract issued; Flushing, NY
3/99/00 82,264; Service Contract Claim - suspension serviced; Flushing, NY

As you can see, it probably depends on the reporting agency, but on at least two of the three, Ohio Police departments filed accident reports which showed up. I also found it odd that a service contract claim for some suspension work showed up in New York on my third van. It was pretty interesting looking up the past history on my previous vehicles.
