Looking to Buy
I am looking to buy a used 1997-2001 Ford Explorer with between 80k-100k miles.. I was wondering if anyone could give some background as to the major repairs that need to be done to this vehicle with this much milage (and approximate cost)..

Thanks in advance..

First thing is first.
Check and change all fluids (obviously)
Check ball joints, sway bars, brakes.
Also give the X a thorough rust inspection before purchasing.

the weak and costly link in the second gen Ex's was the tranny.
The SOHC had a timing chain issue that if it was not repaired under recall could be catastrophic.

Make sure it has had all recall procedures done and the tranny is in good condition.
These two items are the #1 concern. If these are not right. Walk away.
After this it is all your normal check this on every used car type things.
Fluids, tire wear, rust, so on.

I also suggest you take it on a long test drive and run it through the paces, all gears,4x4 etc, listen to the engine after its warmed up not just around a few city blocks...A vehicle will run a lot different when its been running for a while and all the fluids from front to back are hot versus a few minutes of test runs.

Hook up an OBD II scanner and view all the functions.

Good luck .......
