BW 4405 Speedo drive gear

Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the speedometer drive gear without removing the transfer case rear cover? It looks as if access can be had if the rear flange is removed. I'm guessing the gear is held on by a snap ring and slides off the output shaft.
This is in a '96 Explorer, 4 liter, automatic.

I am trying to get it off the shaft now without removing the transfer case, no luck. How did you fix yours?
