Anyone here ever replace the speedometer drive gear in the tranfercase in a Explorer/Ranger?? I plan on replacing mine this weekend and any help would be great.

Done it twice (once on Explorer, once on BII). Not difficult. PUll speed sensor out, remove e-clip that holds gear on, remove gear, reverse procedure to install. I would replace the o-ring (can't remember the size for you. I've got some at home, but I won't be able to check until later today). After all those years, the old o-ring is going to be distorted and almost certainly won't reseal.

Actually, I'm talking about the drive gear, not the driven gear. The drive gear is the in the tranfer case behind the rear output yoke, the driven gear is on the speed sensor. Thanks anyway though.
Anyone else?

take THAT Mr. Shorty!

My apologies. I will promptly go flog myself for not making the distinction between "drive" and "driven." :)

And now you know where it is too. You are dismissed.

If you guys can't play nice, you can't play at all!!

lol

Bueler? Bueler?

Oh... we forgot to answer... I think you have to take the transfer case apart to change the gear.

That's what I figured. It looks like you can remove the rear cover without pulling the t/case from the car. Any experience with that?
