speedo drive gear install help

Hi, New member, have looked on the site a lot before though. Anyways I need to install a speedo drive gear in the transfer case on a '95 explorer v6 eddie bauer 4wd. It keeps eating up the driven gears. The repair manual I have skipped this for some reason.

I have the same problem with my 96 Limited. Unfortunately, it's because there's play in the shaft that the speedo gear is on, which is a much bigger problem, like a bearing or the cover on the transfer case wearing out and allowing the shaft to slide back and forth.

As far as installing the gear, all I know is that when it happened on the road last summer, I was lucky to find a Ford dealer who had a speedo gear in stock. It was about $300 and it took about 3 hours real time.
