engine swap/speedo drive gear ?

I am on the downside of completing my Explorer powered Volvo swap.
One area I am fighting (there have been many!) is the speedo cable drive.
I don't think the donor 2WD 2000 Explorer had a cable but my question is did it have a drive gear on some years od just snag one off a AOD ?
It now has an AOD tail shaft housing but the ring on the shaft certainly doesn't look like it has any teeth.

Shortly after Ford killed off the gear driven VSS, they eliminated the drive gear on the output shaft so there is a very good chance your transmission can't drive a cable.

Worst case is a different output shaft, requires a full trans breakdown. A fresh set of consumables while on there might be a good idea.
