I know this has been covered, but i can't seem to find the thread i had bookmarked, so i'll ask it again.

I've got a C5 getting rebuilt. The guy i bought it from gave me the flex plate that came off the 2.8. Well the flex plate on the 2.8 has 6 bolts and the flex plate for the 4.0 has 8. No biggy cause i still had my flex plate from my first auto, before i swapped in the 5 speed. I laid the 2 side by side and the 4.0 is humped up and doesn't lay flat. I was afraid to go ahead and put it on because of the way the starter is going to mate up. So the question is what flex plate and starter do i use for my 4.0 with the C5??

Thanks for the posts, but it still didn't clear up my flexplate/starter question.

everything I read in those says the 2.8 is the one to use, maybe the one you have isnt acually from the 2.8?

I think that is correct. The problem he has is that in 97 they changed the 4.0L crankshaft design from 6 bolt to 8 bolt. :( So I'm not sure what you can do short of swapping crankshafts or a complete motor.

ahh thats right, I wasnt thinkin he was usin the newer 4.0. Well, im going this sunday to pickup my c4/d20 so well see how it works out.

Not what i wanted to hear! Actually sunday i was looking at the two plates and i was thinking of cutting the welds re-welding (not me, a professional) to make it work.

Anyone else have any input?

if its just something that can be cut from sheetmetal with appropriate punches and holes and whatnot I can do it if you can get a cad of it.

I know the C5 is being used behind the SOHC more and more so there must be a way to bolt it up. The 2.8L likely had a spacer behind the flexplate asw well so that may acocunt for the difference in design?

the info is out there you jsut gotta find it

Update

I took the my two flex plates to a buddy of mine who's a gear head and a machinist today. We laid the two side by side on a level surface. The difference we found is that the torque convert would sit differently when bolted up to the original 4.0 flex plate that i already had. He told me to just put it togther like normal and then once i started to bolt the torque convert the to the tranny then i'd be able to see if it was going to work correctly.

So it's been a few weeks since i called about my c5. I called them and the owner of the shop is who i'm dealing with and he told me the insides looked pretty good, but it's got water in it, like some tried to clean it out or something. He recommended that i get a C4 and he would be able to make one good tranny out of the two. So i can get a c4 for free. It's a 2wd version but Ben told me he's swap the tailshaft out from the c5 and i'd be good to go.

So, i guess i'm back to square one, what flex plate will i end up using on this c4?

hey josh i was at the junk yard the other day and they just pulled the manual tranny out of a 98 2.8 and it was 8 bolt . maybe need a new flex plate ?

I thought the 2.8 wasn't produced that late??

Do you still have that piece for that wiring harness?

i am quoting the guy at the yard. the front end was about folded in half so i couldn't look under the hood to check it but it wasn't the 4.0.. i was there looking for the plug for the reverse lights.

oh and sent you a pm on the plug
