As some of you know, California was trying to pass a law that would put a tax on SUVs to discourage people from buying them. Well, unfortunately, the law has almost passed. It has been through the Senate and the other place it has to pass through once already. Its going through again so they can edit it a bit. I'm really dissappointed and very mad this is going to pass because it is going to add a tax of $3500 on all SUVs which will mean people like me who were planning on getting a new SUV in a year or two won't be able to.

wtf is that all about? how do they justify it?

What if you buy it used??? That tax should only be accessed to the original purchaser of the vehicle, or at least that would only make sense...

So could you buy a CARB certified vehicle in Arizona or Nevada and then relicense it in CA? Or would it be applicable to any vehicle being lecensed?

Just wondering.

Yep, that your good ol democrat liberal tree hugging state congress doing that to us.

If it passes everybody in the state who owns a minivan, SUV or pickup should drive up to Sacramento and clog all the roads around the capital. Then sit there and rev our engines while honking our horns right outside the state capital building!!! See what they do then? Idiots.

The stupidest thing about this law is that some of the idiots trying to pass this law have purchased state owned vehicles that are mostly SUV's or those big heavy sedans which don't get that great of gas mileage. If these idiots stay in charge they will run this great state of CA into the ground!!!

What an excellent idea MyExp! I wish I lived in Californication just to give me an excuse for a road trip.
Also someone should survey every lawmaker who gave a "yes" vote and note the type of vehicle they are driving. I'll bet my new paint job that most are Lincoln Towncars, which are not known for their gas saving ability.

My guess would be that if you bought the car out of state and then licensed it in CA that you would have to pay the tax when you registered it, similar to paying CA sales tax on a vehicle bought out of state and then registered in CA. Seriously, this crap better not pass. And if it does, it better not apply to used cars. I'm getting ready to purchase an SUV that will be a year or two old (let someone else take that hit of depreciation), and I cannot afford $3500 on top of the sales tax too.

Florida used to have somesort of tax on auto ( new purchase ) back in the 70;s. We thought purchasing a car in GA and then registering in FL would beat the Tax, Guess what? No luck,

I assume that CA would haVE similar provisions,

You would think they have something better to worry about:
Illegal aliens
War on Drugs (that one will go on forever)
AIDS
Government corrputed and over influenced by Lobbyist
The War on Terrorism
Healthcare
Mass Transist

Feel free to make your own list!

You have to laugh:
If there is ever an earthquake in CA, God forbid, they will be be looking around for each and every 4WD to access places other vehicles couldn't go during any rescue operations.

Where are their brains!
But then again, who ever said it was rational society!

I also agree with MyExp's idea about sitting out front of the capital and honking horns..........not much of a drive for me to get there...

.... and what will that accomplish? Except getting you arrested for some noise polition law.

Maybe we can drop the horn part...just drive very very sloooow! That's even more effective than making alot of noise.

Besides, "read the clues:"
Viet Nam War, Civil Rights - that stuff didn't change by everyone sitting on their A^%es.

That's what makes American great ....giving stupid policitians a wake up call.

For politicans to care, one must be a VOTER in their state.

naa! a good news release from any state exposing them as the fools that they are works!

Who knows? Mike Wallace from "60 Minutes" may own a SUV? When he shows up at someone's office at 9:00AM, someone's day is usually ruined.
