Calvin peeing stickers...yes or no?

my brother and i went to the cup race at loudon last year and the NH state police were ticketing people
who had the calvin peein stickers claiming they
were obscene.NH is now a safer place.a friend of mine has one on his car, calvin w/chevy bowtie,i keep telling him it has to go.anyway a guy diving a chevy pulls up next to us one time and yells out,(while holding up his cell phone)"hey,1992 just called,he wants his sticker back".

Besides the high amount of Chevy/Ford/Dodge stickers, the common one around here is "Snowbird". I have one. It used to have the number 3 under it, but back when Earnhardt got hurt in Talladega it just didn't seem right. So, I removed the 3 and replaced it with "Berge Ford" after some really bad service from them. I got a lot of thumbs up signs with that one on. I removed it when I took my Explorer in for service at a Loncoln/Mercury dealer that was right down the street from Berge. While I was in there, I found out it was a good thing I removed it since they were owned by the same people that owned Berge Ford. Now it just looks like Calvin is peeing on the Louiseville Assembly Pant.

at work we are constantly peeling stickers off trade-ins and puttin them on other peoples cars

i currently have two stickers on my back window:
1) My punk kid is banging your honor student
2) grateful dead - happy campers tour 88

my boss:
1) half moon rainbow - with the caption "be proud" (hasn't realized it's there yet)

calvin sticker

Those Calvin stickers are a fad that has definetly run its course. Being a firefighter I had one with Calvin in a fire helmet peeing in a burning trash can. I peeled it off a long time ago. Just my opinion.:bounce:

Eventhough this thread doesn't belong here, I'm gonna keep it here, because I would like everyones opinion on this.
My opinion is, I don't really like the Calvin Peeing stickers myself. I don't take offense to them, and in fact I have helped out other trucks that had Calvin peeing on a Ford symbol.
I believe that is way too much political correctness around to suite me. If you want to put it on your truck, fine do it.
The thing about NH ticketing people for having it on their vehicles is sort of BS. There are alot worse things on TV. That infringes on my rights. If they don't like it, then they have the right to not look.
About the Confederate Flag. I don't see it as a negative symbol unless you have *** or someother thing with it. To me it just means this person is from the South of they like the South.
About the Mexican that had the La Migra sign. Well if they don't like it, then go back to Mexico. The INS won't bother them there.
The Great thing about this country is everyone has a right to freedom of speech. I can agree or disagree, just like you can put your Calvin peeing on something sticker or the Confederate Flag, or even Calvin peeing on La Migra.
Somethings may not be popular, but that doesn't mean you can't do it. You have freedom of expression.

well said ray !!!

definately very sound advice ray, thanx...will be putting it on tomorrow

Ray,

Part of your post reminded me of a girl that got arrested in Gilbert, AZ for having a sticker that basically included F**K in it. I can't remember for sure who she was putting down, but I think it was the elderly. Anyway, she was stopped by the PD and the officer told her she had better have it removed the next time he saw her. He saw her the next day and followed her to her place of employment. She was a Teacher's Aid at an elementary school. He had her called to the office and arrested her for the sticker. She sued the town of Gilbert and settled out of court for $10,000. I don't believe the arrest was warranted. I think what should have happened was her employer should have fired her for having it on her car on school property. When the police department arrests you for having objectionable words/pictures on your property that is carrying it too far.

robert - out of curiosity, why do you feel it's wrong for the police (a government institution) to restrict our right to free speech, but do considerate it ok for a school (another goverment institution) restrict it?

Robert,
I think I know why you would want her fired for having it on School property, but if wasn't in sight of the school childern, why would they fire her, and why not just make a ploicy that no foul language signs allowed on school property. I don't think she should be fired for having an objectable sign on her car without first saying that it is objectable and it needs to be removed, at least on school property. Then if she still didn't want to remove it, then she should be fired.

I skipped over a couple of thoughts when I said she should be fired. Every school that I have gone to (which was almost 20 years ago now) has had a policy forbiding students to wear or display anything deemed inapropriate. We couldn't wear shirts advertising beer, profanity or nudity. I feel employees should follow the same rules. I was trying to point out that I felt that it was an employer/employee issue, not an issue with the law. I am not against private organizations from placing "speech restrictions" on their property. My company has certain restrictions that I know I have to follow. Most of them are not restrictions that should get me arrested though. I would not expect to get fired if I had the same sticker on my vehicle since it doesn't have anything to do with my job or other people in my line of work that I come in contact with. I would expect my company to get upset if I put DiamlerChrysler uner my Calvin sticker though since they are one of our largest customers. I frequently have DC customers come in throughout the year and occasionally take them to lunch in my Explorer. It would be major embarassment for my company to receive a complaint from our largest customer regarding a sticker that was putting down their company. I guess it boils down to whether or not someone would consider an elementary school a private organization or one that is ran by the government. I feel it is closer to a private organization even though it is a public elementary. I just don't feel the government should place restrictions on speech. It should be left up to the privtate organizations to limit speech that is suitable to the individual location. For instance it wouldn't be proper for a bar to outlaw shirts with beer logos on them. It is proper for a school. It wouldn't be proper for the government to flat out ban beer logo shirts in public.

I should have said that she should have received a warning to remove the sticker from her car. If she didn't comply then she should have been fired (actually I think she was but I couldn't find the story in the AZ Republic archives to verify). I do not believe the police department was justified in arresting her for bad judgement. I do not know if her car was visible to kids or not but I suspect that it was. I know the busses for the schools I went to picked the kids up in the parking lot. If her car was parked in the same lot, then it is likely that it would have been seen by the kids at least waiting for their bus or their parents.

I whole heartedly agree with you.:)

I can't agree with that. A Mexican person is allowed to come to America and legally become a citizen. And now that the Mexican is a legal citizen, he will still get hassled by the INS just because they are adhering to a stereotype that all Mexicans are wetbacks. While I know that I can't garauntee that that's the situation here, I can still flat out say that someone should be able to voice they're discontent over a government organization hassling them because of stereotypes, and they should be able to do it without being told go back to Mexico.

Imagine a black person walks into a shopping mall, and gets hassled by the police because they think, "Look, he's black, he's going to steal something." They followed a stereotype. The black man would obviously be pissed off, and imagine he walked past you saying, "Damn police" or something like that, and you look at him and say, "Well go back to Africa where our police won't mess with you". That's effectively the same thing you've done here with the Mexican in the car.

he was not legal, diablo.

when the INS came after him, he got married. then he put the sticker on his car (toyo. tercel) because the INS was pestering him to make sure he was still married.

last i heard though, he moved back to mexico.

That's new information. The way it was written was like, "The other day I saw a Mexican who had a sticker..." No one ever said anything about knowing the history of this one guy

i was just thinking....ive seen the stickers before, but who is calvin? is he some character from somewhere else? or just made for those stickers? haha, sorry, bored.

I've got one thats peeing and giving you the one finger solute. Hes peeing on the words "RICE BURNERS." I love it! It sits next to my other sticker that says "BAD ASS BOYZ DRIVE BAD ASS TOYZ."

Well I'm of Mexican decent and I have had INS check up on me, even thought I was borned in the U.S.. I don't take it personal. They are doing their job. There are good ones and there are bad ones in every job, including the Government. now I don't know the whole story on this particular guy, but the few times I have had to deal with INS I have had no bad time. Here in Cali they look at Mexicans, because that's mostly who tries to come across the border. Sometimes they stop you and sometimes they don't.
Now the comment that was made "if they don't like it then they can go back to MexicoThe INS won't bother him there." was my opinion, and you have every right to disagree with it. It's just my opinion.

as far as stickers go on my truck, i have a few....a slipknot one, gotta love the knot:D , a tunnel fear one, gotta love myself, and then the mandatory, $75 parking ones my school likes to "give" out

I'll try to keep this from becoming a long dissertation.

IMHO, the Calvin peeing stickers and the Calvin flipping the bird stickers just show a lack of class. Yes, we have freedom of speech here, and you can pretty much say what you want , but those stckers are tasteless! Every time I see one of those stickers on a vehicle with a car seat in it, I wonder what the parents are teaching their kids. Are they teaching them that it's ok to bash someone or something just because you don't agree with what they like or drive?? For those of you that have them, but don't have kids, ask yourself how you would explain the sticker to a 3 year old that asks "What's that mean Daddy??". Personally, I would rather not have to try to explain that to my daughter. She doesn't need to know that the middle finger means F**k You, and I'd like her to keep her innocence for a little longer.

Just my Rant!!
:p
