Does anyone know what the normal material is for the cam synchronizer gear? This is for a 1997 5.0. I was working on the final details with my engine builder and he mentioned that I need a melanized or steel gear for the cam he used. Defiantly not a cast gear.

I tried looking on the auto parts sites to see if any of them list the material (oriellies, rock auto…) and none of them do.

I figure if the stock application is cast I should be able to replace the gear with an aftermarket one just like they do for conversion distributers.

Thanks,
Dan

You need the same gear as all Ford roller cam engines come with, steel, not the others. All of the stock Ford roller cam distributors, and the two cam synchronizers, they come with hard steel gears for the hard steel cams. Do not buy any non Ford synchronizer, those all have a greater chance of the roll pin shearing, or being misaligned to the cam gear.

Thanks for the reply and the pointer on the non-Ford Syncronizer. I had replaced mine befor due to chirping, but never had one fail. Still, its good to be safe on this type of thing. hate to be stranded out on the trail due to this failing.

The builder I went with normally builds for racing type applications with distributers. He had the cam custom ground for this specific motor/application. That is why I asked him and pointed out that I am using the EDIS ignition with the syncronizer, not a distributer. He said as long as the gear is not cast I should be OK. That lines up with what you are saying so I should be all good.
