I just found an extremely good deal locally on a 98 with a blown engine in otherwise near perfect condition, would it be possible to swap my 93 motor into the 98?
edit:both ohv and both auto

Might work but couldnt say for sure, but you will have to remove all of the OBD-I sensors and replace with the OBD-II sensors as well as everything that is currently on the blown motor. I have a 2000 OHV in my 91 so I know they will go the other way. Some say there could be problems because of the different head designs. The combustion chambers I think are different. Depending how much the 98 is going for, you could also just get a junk yard motor for around 5 to 700 bucks. If you have the low oil sensor in your oil pan then I would use the 98 pan as well. Once again I have my 91 pan on the 2000 motor. I don't know the particular year but they swiched from a standard gasket to an O-ring type so you will need to make sure you get the right gasket for the year oil pan you use. Good luck

Thanks, it ended up selling before even had a chance to check it out.

I am going to say no for 1 reason, the 93 block has a different oil pump drive where the cam position sensor sits, so basically your 98 cam sensor will not fit into the 93 block.

So you can use the 93 block if you dont care about this, OR if you get a 94 style cam sensor and wire it up to fool the 98 computer to thinking its a 98 cam sensor (98 uses two wires I believe, 93-94 has 3) its possible

So the answer is yes/no :)

it can be done, but you can expect to run into these things...and do as stated above, strip it down to just the long block and use all the 98 stuff on top.....you will have to use the 93 style flywheel, evereything else comes from the 98

I'm a little confused on the cam sensor. When I swapped mine over the other way, the sensors looked to be in the same location, as a matter of fact, I think I am using the 2000 lower intake on mine which would not match up if the sensor was in a different location. I maybe wrong, but I could have sworn I used the 2000 lower intake.

okay check this out to help you even get more confused.
91-92 did not have a cam sensor, they just have a little block off plate where the distributor would normally sit on the 2.9L (oil pump drive cover)
in 93 they typically did not have this sensor either, UNLESS the truck was a CA vehicle, then the 93 had EGR and a CAM sensor.

in 94 they all were like the 93 CA version, with EGR and a cam sensor.

So your 91 computer does not even have wires for a cam sensor, so it wouldnt matter if it was in your block or not.

if you are using a 2000 lower intake then you are using the 2000 upper as well?
I know the depth of the drive gear on the cam sensor varies depending on which lower you use, but I didnt think the 91-94 lower intake would work with the 95+ plastic upper.
And then of course in what 98 they went to the returnless style fuel rail?

You see it can all get very confusing :)

But bascally there are 3 4.0L engine blocks, the 91, the 93 and the 95+ with the 95+ being the strongest heads and casting.....lets not even get into compression numbers and swapping heads :) or running SOHC pistons, etc...

Well not to confusing. You are right there is no CPS in my motor. I simply took the 2000 CPS out and replaced it with the drive gear from my 91 and installed the blank. Now maybe the CPS on a 93 might be deeper, that I don't know. As far as the upper intake goes, no. I am using the 91 upper. I do not think there is a difference between the 2 manifolds except that the studs that hold the upper intake to the lower are longer. And no I used the 91 fuel rail on the new motor because of the different fuel systems. On another note the older injectors cannot be used either. The 98 injectors will have to be reused. Like I said before, if you can get the truck for a decent price, then spending 500 or so bucks on a used motor would be worth it. Then you could use the 93 as a beater :p Creager has done the whole SOHC piston thing and his motor sounds good.

I ran into issues with the depth of the sensors when I put a 97 block into a 95 truck....
I spliced the wires from the 95 harness to accept the 97 sensor, it works fine.

Just FYI.

so yes the 93 block can be used quite easily, sorry not sure why i said no now that I think about it, as long as you are prepared for this stuff.....bottom line is your 98 computer will want to see a signal from a CPS but your 93 block may not be fitted with one. So if you go to get one make sure you get one that will fit a 93 block, and then you will have to do some wiring to hook it up because the 93 sensor has 3 wires and the 98 has two, the 3rd wire in the 93 sensor is grey/red which is a ground (sensor signal return) and you can also find it in your 98 harness.....

So yeah be prepared to do some simple wiring and make sure you can fit a CPS into your 93 block before you install it because its a *&%$in ***** to do once the engine is in place.
