a whine coming from the front that is not the engine?
meaning when you are rolling or meaning when the engine is running?
Lets see it could be the idler pulley, the tensioner pulley, the fan/clutch, water pump, alternator, steering pump, etc...
It could be the front diff, cv joints, U joints, t case, wheel bearing & hub assembly, brake caliper/pads/rotor...
A little more info please.

Also the 98 had two different 4.0L V6 engines, the OHV and the SOHC
