IIRC the 98 cherokee has a more round type body compared to the first gen's but possibly with bending it and modifying it...a straight bolt i highly highly doubt it
It sure looks like it would work, maybe have him measure the height from the mounts to the bottom bar and top bar of the guard so you have some idea where it would sit give or take a few...
Depends on if that is the original finish, or a rattlecan craigslist jobber, and if it's a brand name bar... If it's clean and close to fitting, that's not too bad from what I've seen around here. I'd offer like $65 and see what he says. Brushguards are odd- around here, they either sell in an hour, or sit on CL for weeks waiting to sell. Might find a hungry dude who wants to get it out of his house...
I made an '01 Explorer brush guard fit on my 92.
As square as the pic you posted looks I really think you will be able to make it fit.
I drove 3 1/2 hours for mine so I was very concerned with it fitting...
I just had the seller give me a width and height measurement to make sure it would clear. I had to play with the brackets and get creative with the tabs that attach to the bumper (I think they're actually supposed to go in between the bumper and grill and attach behind the grill, but I'm replacing my bumper anyway )
But it was pretty straightforward...I think that's a real fair price though. The only ones you can buy brand new anymore for our first Gens are the cheap JC Whitney jobbies (and all the reviews I've read say the finish doesn't hold up on those at all...bolts rust too).
I would give it a go!
