will i be able to mount a pair of hella 500 driving lights sideways on my uprights for my grille guard. i mean, instead of the mounting bolt being above or below the light, but mount them so the bolt will either be on the left of the right of the light. i know it is physically possible becaise i already the hols where i would mount them, but would the beam pattern be the same if i were to mount them with the bolt above/below it? thanks so much people.

dontknow about the Hella's but you may also be able to turn the actual bulb and lens assembly inside the housing so that up stays up. You can also get a good idea of how the beam is gonna shoot out of those lenses just by looking at them, if they look like they are directional then I would say no, since you dont want a beam of light shooting straight vertical instead of spread out along the horizon.

Can you hook one up to a battery in a dark garage and then turn it to see if it is effected?

Does the packaging or instructions show you anything about the beam and how to aim them?

Just brainstorming......

I don't think the light housing will like being hung sideways, it might not be able to hold itself up. Dunno, just a thought.

I tried mounting a pair of 1000s FF sideways. The performance is not good. It look likes a narrow strip of light going from the ground way up into the sky.

no.

hey now I never like the answer "no" when it comes to lights. LOL
The answer is it can be done but probably won't be worth the hassle. Here's what you would have ot do (and don't quote me on this because I don't remember exactly how the 500's mount), but you might be able to turn the lens sideways and still mount it. With hella's quality on the 500's though I wouldn't count your chickens before there hatched though, I know i"ve seen it done on PIAA 520's though, but those have metal houseings and the lenses are held in with two screws on either side of the lens... they just had ot drill two new holes and mount the lights to those holes, and plug up the old ones for waterproofness.

the way the bulb and wires "sit" in the back of the housing prevent these from being mounted sideways and working effectively.

unscrew the lens from the housing and you will see what i mean.

matt, i like to give direct answers to direct questions. LOL
