Can it go Off-road and where to go?

I just purchased a 1997 XLT V8 with all wheel drive. It only has 30,000 on it and runs really good. I was just wondering what kind of off road ablility it has. Can it go the same places at the 4 wheel system? It is all stock, just because I don't have the money right now. Also, I live in Athens, GA, about 60 miles east of atlanta and was wondering where I can off-road at. Thanks for you help.

Welcome, there are several members in your area..Do a search for Atlanta, you should come up with something..If you don't mind the ride, the Fl. Ex. club is running this weekend, 16/17 June..Bout a 6 hr ride for ya, if interested let me know..

The only way to find out where it can go is to take it there! Try to find some locals that have 4wd vehicles and see if you can tag along (or convince them to go) on one of their outings. You will never know what you and your vehicle can do until you try. As for the AWD vs. 4wd, the AWD may have a few things it can't handle, but it should be able to go anywhere a 4wd with open differentials can (and probabley more).

If you're running with other stockers you won't find very many places that LOW gear will help them enough that you couldn't make it too... I go out and run with the Colorado Contingent at least once a month... We have a great time... There are big dawgs and stockers that all run together... Now granted Perry and Matt don't have to worry about scraping when they run with us but we all have fun... I've gone a vew places in my X that I probably shouldn't have gone but hey it was sure fun... All I can say it take it out and try it...

I totally agree with all the guys here! You will never know what your truck can do unless you go out there and scrape the bottom a little (like I did) and rub some paint off your running boards (also like I did)! When I went out, just this past weekend, my friend and I had a BLAST! My belief is that MY Explorer doesn't belong off-road, that's why it's geared and set-up for the street, not off-road. But I wanted to change all of that by seeing if my baby is any good off road; and I have to admit, when I did take her off-road, she impressed me!

Go out, try it, and have fun... I am sure your AWD system will work just as good as any 4WD system on this board!
