am stuck guys...today the truck made a weird sound as I was coming down the hill...I rounded a corner and went to downshift..it wouldn't go into gear...I tried several times then it went in. I was able to shift back up , but it was hesitating a bit. It never grinded or anything. Anyway when I pulled into my friends driveway everything seemed ok. THEN as I was leaving (a light incline) I shifted from 1st to 2nd, then stopped at the end of his drive before pulling out onto the highway, then back into 1st gear, and it didn't move...on the gas and it revved like it was in neutral. I tried reverse..same thing. Put into 4wd drive, same thing. I can still shift through alll the gears, no grinding. Being it seems as though it is in gear I didn't think it was the clutch, but the guy who is going to do the work thinks it is. I don't want to pay to have the clutch replaced if it is not the problem. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

check the clutch master cylinder resevoir, make sure you have brake fluid in there!!

I would think the lack of clutch fluid would make the clutch stay engaged not be disengaged as he is describing.

hmmmm so with the truck running at idle, you can depress the clutch and easily put it in 1st gear, let out the clutch and nothing happens?

idle does not change?
truck does not move?

Something is broken :)

The good news is you can view the clutch operation fromt he clutch access port in the transmission...
so you can have somebody depress the clutch pedal (truck not running) and look and see if the clutch is opening/closing

Could be something in the t case, something in the transmission, this is an odd one

It could be your shifter is loose and you are not even in a gear??? shifter could be loose or broken? does it feel loose?

What year is the truck and how old is the clutch?

So did you notice anything wrong with the clutch before? Usually it will slowly get worse unless you do something like use 4hi to try and climb a hill!:D I did that! haha

you know ...( my 2 cents here) would a broke shift fork have that effect .reason i say this is after looking at a exploded diagram i'm thinkin that a broke shift fork would let the shifter handel move but actually do nothing on the inside if the unit .

the transfer case is chain driven is it not ...may have slung the chain off... just some ideas

if the shift fork was broken the clutch would not disengage, and than it would be grinding every time he moved the shifter,
might be internal to the transmission, like the syncros or input shaft,

first clue would be the noise it made,, pop, crunch , or grind ??
next would be to look thru the inspection access port to see if the clutch and pressure plate are spinning,
put the truck up on jack stands, and go thru the gears, ,

It is an 93 Explorer with 153K on it. I did not notice anything with the clutch prior to this. My guy said that today he had it on the lift, he said that the tires spun slowly when engaged...? Didn't understand that really.
When I put it into gear and let out the clutch, nothing happens...idle does not change, unless I press the gas, then it revs like it is in neutral. He also said something about the clutch feathered or something like that...didn't understand that either. Having the clutch replaced will cost almost as much as having the tran replaced, and I really don't want to throw darts and see what sticks.

The clutch in my '84 ranger had been slipping for awhile, but when it finally went out it was just about like you described, I was trying to pull out of the drive way up a slight incline and nothing, it was done. but it had been slipping for awhile, so if you never noticed it slipping????

No the clutch slipping, the engine rpm's increase and the truck does not go any faster, or does not accelerate at the same rate of speed that the engine is reving up.

Feathered could mean that the clutch plate is warpep. If so, this casues the clutch plate to wear unevenly causing a "feather" affect. More worn in some areas than others. Happened on mine when I changed it.
