can you hot glue carpet?

I was wondering if you could use a hot glue gun to get carpet to stick together?

you could, but i've never tried it so i'm not sure how well it would work. perhaps you could elaborate on exactly what it is you're doing...are you actually gluing carpet to carpet, or carpet to another surface?

Carpet in your X? Stick to where? It wouldn't stick very well but you could do it..

well im trying to make like a carpet patch for my truck I just got some used carpet for my blazer and the only damage is a spot under the drivers feet. Its like a wear mark or something so I was gonna take some spare carpet and make a patch to put of the wear spot.

Well if you put your feet on the carpet it'll eventually come loose.

hmm yeah never thought of that . The spot goes under the floor mat so you wont see it. But my only concern is its down to the webbing material on the carpet so I dont want it to spread or anything . Does anyone know of anything I can do to stop it from spreading or comeing unraveled?

Try A home carpet outlet, they sell 3 inch wide seam tape that is nothing more than gluegun glue on a jute backing.
Carpet installers use a regular iron to melt the glue when making seams, I used a heat gun

just put like a strip of it on the wear mark and heat it so it melts into it?

Pull the carpet, cut and shape your patch, to wear/age your patch wash in a net bag or pantyhose (best) that way you can even match color. Use carpet TAPE and a hot iron, there you go a nearly seamless patch. If you are going to do it, do it RIGHT, the FIRST time.

No thats not it, if you go to a store that installs carpet, they will most likely give you a strip, it's glue impregnated, about a 16th inch thick, has to be heated to melt the glue, will stick to anything, good luck

ok forgive me for so many questions . But after iI get the tape and the patch put in what can I use to heat the glue up? When you say hot iron do you mean a clothes iron?

Another option would be to use a heavy contact cement, thats what ford used OEM

That will work, just put it on thick on both surfaces, let it get real tacky, stick the carpet down and put some wgt on it for a couple hrs

No they don't.. I used to install carpet.. They call them irons cause quite frankly that is what we do with them.. we pull the seaming iron across the tape after it has heated properly. As for using the seaming tape, you can use it however if the tape is not heated properly, you will never obtain good adhesion.. not to mention if you want it to look perfect you have to make sure the backings of the carpet are touching.. Any overlap or gap between them will show up easily. If your doing the interior of your truck, I would suggest using some contact adhesive if you want it permanent.. You can use a hot glue gun if you like however the hot glue like any other adhesive will eventually fall apart.. Depending on how small of a patch your putting inside your interior of your truck, you can probably get away with using an exterior grade carpet adhesive or contact adhesive. We often put contact adhesive on concrete steps when we carpet them if they are exposed to the elements.. I feel sorry for the mf'ers who has to pull the 15 steps I did with contact adhesive at a tennis club near me..
