Yes, rumor has it that Ford switched it to 5W-20 to claim slightly better fuel economy, though the other camp claims that oil just got better and then 5W-20 was viscous enough.

You didn't do that good of a job telling us your City/State as just USA, so I can't make a climate related suggestion, except 5W-30 for average to warmer climates.

The local Ford dealer gave me the below information and told me not to use 5W30.
So, I thought it wise to check whether the below information is accurate:

/////////////////////info from dealer:
steering fluid: Motorcraft Mercon 5 (transmission/steering fluid)
brake: standard DOT3
differentials:
rear: 75W140
front: 8090

transmission fluid: same as above steering fluid.

transfer-case: still need to find out what fluid to use (forgot to ask dealer), but I inferred online it is Mercon LV.
//////////////////////////////////////////////end info from dealer

2004 Mercury Mountaineer, v6, 4liter, awd.
use 5-30 imo in general, since that is what is recommended.
OP lives in an area where winters can get to zero, maybe below. I suggest the lighter weight for the coming winter
not to dispute, but imo 30 is still better, since it is the hot number. the cold number, the 5, is the same, so cold flow should be nearly the same. just the thickness when hot is higher, which protects the engine better. especially on these older motors, i do wonder.

yes that is accurate. the trans and PS take merc 5, or merc (obsolete), brakes do take Dot 3 (have heard of some using dot 4, have not tried), the diff takes 75-140 ONLY if you have an LS diff, in which case it also takes 2(?) oz of the fric mod, if you have an OPEN diff, it takes 80/90 just like the front, no LS additive. the transfer case does take merc LV, yes. no merc v in that, only MERC or merc LV. i forgot what it was about merc V that makes it incompatible, think it was the additive pack and maybe viscosity? i do wonder why they said not to use 5-30, since it is in the manual, and it was never superseded to my knowledge.

You state you have the V6 which you're supposed to be using 5W30 in. It's the V8 that uses 5W20.

I get the Castrol GTX 5W30 from Walmart even at 240K miles (I don't believe in "high mileage" voodoo formulas).

In these building years the 4.0 V 6 in the Explorer gets 5 W 30 anyway, the Mercury should have the same engine ;-) The V8 gets 5 W 20. That s what Ford recommends and to be on the safe side, don t use something else. ALWAYS make sure the oil you choose has also the Ford specification

^ True, but ford issued a TSB for many vehicles during this era, that were originally spec'd for 5W-30 but changed it to 5W-20. However the Explorer/Mountaineer V6 was excluded, should still be 5W-30.

Yep only the 5.0 got 5w 20 the 4.0 is 5W 30 only

i thought the v8 still had 30 it was the 4.6 that got 20 no?
I've heard 5w 20 or 30 in the v8 personally I'd run 30 just because it was built with it

It's confusing. In one TSB Ford excluded the 5.0L V8 from switching to 5W-20 and in another TSB, they didn't mention it which implied they were including it. Either way, the only reason stated for the switch was fuel economy and I agree, a big old engine shouldn't run 5W-20 except in very cold climates and even then, shorter trips or else it's getting up to temp anyway.

Yep id stick with 5W-30
