hey, my inspection just expired today and i went to the shop. i told the guy that the transmission was broken and that it wont start moving unless its started in '2' gear and it is shifted into 'D' when fast enough. (this is because i blew out my 1st gear)

he told me he wouldnt be able to inspect it because he would have to put it on his dyno that needs to read speeds up to 65mph

then i told him thats fine, just start running it in '2' then when it gets up to 15 mph just shift it in 'D' and the shifting will resume normally unless you drop below 10mph

he said that the dyno constantly goes up and down from 5mph to 65mph

so i left, but after i left, it occurred to me, what do they do when your car is a manual if they cant be shifting on the dyno???

p.s. the reason for this madness is because i am going to be fixing my transmission this weekend, and i just wanted to get it inspected so i dont get ticketed in the next 4 days.

Can you just get a "rejection" sticker to cover you until you get it fixed? Not sure how it works up there, but we can do that with our safety inspections here.

Been there! It gives you another 30 days ;)

Bloomberg will probably start givin tickets out for those too!!

Did you know 41,000 people left the city of new york in the past 2 years?

Just thought I'd throw that in there.

When I got my last emission inspection the guy could not run the dyno test because it wasn't set up for a 4X4. They only had the roller for the back wheel and everytime they shift it to drive the car would just bog down. Scared the heck out of both of us. So he just gave me the "visual" inspection.

They can shift on the dyno. I witnessed one of the NY "mega inspections" they now perform with my old '97 Trans Am WS6. It was pretty funny to watch the guy shift and have the car almost jump off the dyno (only held on by the straps).

When he got out he was like "WOW! That car has got some balls!" :D

I had to keep an eye on him because I know they would have taken it for a "test drive"

i'm thinking about leaving too. cops are busting pregnant ladies for sitting on subway steps to take breathers. meanwhile my friends in LA have medicinal permits and smoke on the steps of the police stations. apparantly its june 24th and its still winter here and we havnt had a day that didnt rain yet. people are ridiculously rude, and an 8oz bottle of water costs $2 plus tax (they look at you like your going to rob the place by asking for just tap water and ice). this place turned from being afraid of muggers and criminals, to constintly watching your back for cops looking to give you ridiculous tickets.

i've lived in NYC my whole life, but you know what...F*CK NYC. i'm trying to get out of here as soon as i can.

I just watched them do the inspection on my Ex a couple weeks ago, and all they did was first drive it (on the machine) at a speed between 25 and 35 for a minute, then decellerate and drive it between 15 and 20 for a minute.

Must be a slightly different inspection in Georgia

Inspection? What inspection? Out here in Oregon we don't have no stinking inspections! The only place that requires DEQ testing is the Portland area.
I think inspections are less about safety and more about generating revenue for the state and licened inspection stations.

VA safety inspections are $15 (just went up from $10). For that price, the inspection stations make nothing since a good inspection should take 15-20 minutes. Of course, some dishonest inspectors DO find some problems that don't really exist, but most are good people and don't pull that crap. I personally think our inspections should be more thorough in some regards (legal issues). IMO, forcing people to have their vehicle checked out by a mechanic for safety issues every year is a good idea. We have enough accidents around here, the last thing we need is more people driving around with bad tires, brakes, and wipers.

In some counties in TN you have to get an inspection and some you dont....but it did go up from $10-15 here too Rob. They for sure dont put it on a dyno lol.

$25 in Georgia. And they only accept cash. One year I went to have it done, but I only had a credit card, and I didn't know the "cash only" rule until after the test. They held my test results until the next day when I could come back and give them cash. Arghhh, why so difficult?

Also, just like was mentioned about Tennessee, inspections aren't done in Georgia except for the Atlanta area. Oh well, I guess that's just one of the joys of living in the most heavily polluted city in the US :D Yesterday, today, and tomorrow were/are all smog alert days, be careful everybody!
