Can't sell the X!!

It's worth about $2000USD, lower your price to $2250. Don't put in your add that the 4x4 is out. If someone is interested have them come to look at it. Let them know that the 4x4 needs to be fixed and it'll be about $250. Knock the $250 off and you still get what it's worth at $2000.

I know you want to make some cash, we all do. Realistically, you've got to lower the price. Don't fix anything, let the person who buys it fix it if they choose to. You just have to tell them that it's broken.

Good Luck

PS, you can't add to the price of the truck what you paid to have it e-tested and safety tested. That is your cost to sell. Basically, you do it to help get the car sold, not to increase the price.

heck, i bought an explorer in perfect shape except for a blown tranny for 100 bucks, that price is way high. Id start asking 2k if it was in perfect condition. I mean spotless, inside and out. And if you want to sell it that badly, for that price, isnt it worht the 2 hrs to fix the shift motor? just my .02

I have bought and sold plenty of vehicles (kind of a hobby) and let me tell you from experience: it's true that the more things that are wrong with a vehicle the less people want to pay for it, and if they see something is wrong, they think there might be more things they dont know about and will hessitate to carry out a purchase. for examplethe saturn I recently sold had fried a cable- a very simple fix, but some people wanted 500 bucks or more knocked off so I fixed the cable and sold it for what I expected. My $.02

Perhaps I spend $200 to fix the shift motor and it will sell? Do I add $200 to the asking price? What if it's the 4x4 control module computer (ie. around $750-$1000) to replace in the shop? Should I fix then add to the price?

That's no way to get it SOLD......though, there MIGHT be someone out there who would bite (never say never).

BUT, IMHO......IF, you don't want to fix it.......declare that the 4x4 is broken and drop the price. Simple......it's not selling at his point and may never sell (for your asking price)......but, lowering the price may help you move it......Simple. You wanna "move it" or you wanna continue to wait for a buyer at your asking price (who may never come)?

Aloha, Mark

All as said above-- price is too high and Ad says it's broken. I paid $1900 for my 94 with 105,000 miles two years ago and everything on it worked fine. I've put about $800 into parts to fix stuff that has gone wrong with it since then-- that doesn't mean I can now sell it for $2700. The cost of all the repairs I've done to it would probably be $3,000+ dollars if done at a shop.

For someone that doesn't fix it themselves-- the kind of person I was before I bought it-- they're going to figure the likely repair costs for such an old vehicle. When I bought it, my wife asked "How much will it cost if the transmission or the engine dies?" I told her $80 for the tow to the junk yard. I bought it thinking that I paid little enough money that I wouldn't feel too bad if it died a year later. Of course now, I just can't let the ol' gal die, but that's another story. I would be pretty happy to sell it for over $1000 (if I were trying to sell it.) That's probably about the price that someone wouldn't feel too bad if they got hit with an $800 repair bill a couple months down the road.

That's my .02 on how someone buying an old junker is likely to think.

To be honest bugsy the other posters here are being very diplomatic toward you. Out here in truck crazy cowboy country you'd be lucky to get a G for that. Case in point I'm picking up a 94 with a blown clutch from a friend of a friend who is delighted to be getting the $750 I offered and this thing is mint. Keep in mind everything sells at the right price point. Good luck.

You bought it for $700-750, I wouldn't expect to get much more then that. You really cant add to the price of the vehicle for repairs, case and point: I just put in a new transmission in my 94X last February with a shift kit, new brakes,in Sept, and new RA urathane bushings, and new RA mount ,tires and upper and lower ball joints, but that still doesnt make my truck worth anymore, just makes it worth book value. Yeah it sucks but sadly thats the facts, good luck, and like everyone said fix the motor and drop it to around $2000

hmmm....well, if I'm only going to get around 2K for it, I might as well keep it to bomb around with in the winter and save my good truck. We'll see, then again, 2K in my pocket would also be nice.

OR you are waiting for someone like me who knows I can fix the 4x4 for $15 or whatever and snatch it up. Problem is I wont pay that much for a 92 just because I would be looking for a wicked deal on a beater I can overhaul, then sell.........so you are looking for a buyer who will = wants 4x4 working. You call Ford and ask them how much to fix shift motor, can be $300-500 = dealbreaker.

Fix that sucker!

Then buy mine :-)

Fixed the 4x4 for $150 (brand new shift motor). So we'll see if she sells now. I'm also gonna throw a coat of paint on it. Who knows...it might look and run good enough for me to keep after I'm done with it.

I bought my 93 XLT for $800. 4x4 (still) doesn't work. At the time it had about 140k miles. Drop your price.

I have been in the automobile business successfully for over seven years now. The market obviously varies depending on region. With that being said, IMO, unless the buyer in front of you doesn't truly know the automobile market, a properly maintained good running SUV with working A/C that is in good cosmetic shape and ~100,000 miles is worth around $2000. This represents a price that an individual would ask, not a dealer. Throw in a properly working 4x4 and the price goes up considerably, especially if you live in a climate where 4x4 is truly needed during certain times of the year, as it gives you more options on those truly nasty days, not being a hobby, but a nessecity. (Like having to run to the grocery store to get milk for the baby or whatever else may be needed on those days where 2wd means that you are stuck until the snow plow makes it to your neighborhood) Keep in mind that I am talking about a 10-13 year old SUV in good mechanical and cosmetic shape. There truly are some sleds out there where the previous owner(s) smoked, ate, spilled drinks, coffee, food, etc, and didn't care what it made the vehicle look or smell like, as long as it started and got them where they needed to go. These vehicles are the ones that typically can be had for much of nothing, because they need WORK to even be driveable. However, like myself, many owners actually care about what condition their personal vehicle is in, and keep it clean, well maintained, and ready to drive wherever may be needed. These vehicles demand a higher price than those with numerous mechanical, cosmetic, and cleanliness issues.

P.S. This is not a rant(maybe a little) nor is it meant to offend anyone. Just my opinion based on my personal and business experience. As a general rule of thumb, if a person were to find a CLEAN 93-94 Explorer 4x4 with around 100-110K with all maintanance performed and everything working as it should then expecting to pay $3500-$4500 is not unreasonable. I know that sometimes there are deals to be had where the previous owner just wants to sell it quick because they are "desperate" for cash, or just want to get rid of it, but these typically represent vehicles with hidden problems that don't make themselves apparant until a few days(even hours) after the sale. If a seller KNOWS that they have a no excuses 4x4 SUV that is in good order then they are not going to just "give away" the vehicle. I know that I wouldn't. :)
