I have a 00 XLT with the SOHC engine purchased 8 months ago and now has 18,000 on it. The timing chain tensioner makes noise on first start but only lasts 10-15 seconds, sounds like untill oil gets there. Any way start up noise got louder so I took it to the dealer. He said I had the newest tensioner but my problem was carbon build up from the oxygenated fuel used here. He did a cleaning and oil change, oils been changed every 3-4000 miles, and it does seem quieter. Still I did not have any pinging or other indication of low octane or carbon build up and why only at startup? Also the tensioner still rattles.
Has any one else experienced this with the 87 octane oxygenated gas at this low mileage of an engine. If so any suggestions on curing the probem would be appreciated.
