Before you post about something you dont understand atleast take time to read the posts above you as some of them actualy know what they are talking about. Dont remove your cats. Its just stupid

Yes legally your cat(s) must be there...if you had taken the time to read my post, you would have noticed I said technically they don't need to be! I think we all realize to be considered 'street legal' it must run a cat. There are many built rigs that have no use for a cat because they are strictly for offroad use. Again technically your cat can sit anywhere, or be punched full of holes, or be completely removed! Will it be street legal...obviously not....but is that stupid ? Well I guess if your a tree hugging greenie then you can call it that, but everyone is entitled to an opinion aren't they? I'm not gonna call you stupid for your opinion...so why be so rude? I also clearly stated that my comment could be wrong! Was it?...actually no it wasn't, I even said that it wouldn't pass smog or be legal...but hey that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about or that I can't comment on the thread! As for the tranny rebuilds...I think you may be on to something with them not rebuilding correctly. I think they just keep replacing the soft parts, and not doing a full rebuild. My other though was a bad input shaft...any opinions? Oh and I've always run the steel plugs in my M5OD.

I may have misread your post. I thought you were saying it was fine to move a cat. Yse the vehicle will run. However the cat will not do a whole lot of good. Removing them is stupid in my book because of the fines involved if you are cought. Your last comment was worded well and professionaly

what it boils down to, is the motor.

Is the motor going to be effected in a positive or a negitive way by removing the cats?

on a 4.0, you might notice a nice increase in sound. A lot of people claim a low-end power loss due to the fact of decrease back-pressure. Personally i have never tried it, i go by what i research.

on a 5.0, you might be taking a trip to the ear doctor to get your perferated ear drums looked at

the last reman'd M5R1 i saw came with the plug holes welded shut.

The only way your going to find out is by doing it. Move the cats back by 2 ft... more then likley you wont notice a difference. But if you do, start over.

Agreed (about the legality and fines) and also about it changing how well gases are converted...although it would be interesting to see exactly how large or small the difference in emissions levels would be with the cat pushed further back. I mean explorers came stock with two cats, but I know most guys who go custom opt for a single high-flo cat. I run mine this way...and the emissions are above average.

I think its illegal to remove the converter according to the Clean Air Act of 1990..

the only way i know how is if its registered as one of those special vehicles or if it is old enough so it doesnt have to meet the requirements... i forget what how old it has to be tho but my guess is like 25 something years..

A vehicle can infact pass a sniffer test with no cat. Trust me I got a 6 month emissions liscense suspension for passing a checker car that past the dyno test with no cat

oh i was speaking more in legal terms...

i think they're supposed to actually look if theres a cat under the car.. using a mirror on a long handle thing.. kinda like what they use at the borders.. or when u enter a military base.

in PA you must first visualy inspect all emissions equipment then run the dyno sniffer test. Well thats how it was then. They found out the car had no cat cause it was infact a checker car to see if our shop was following the rules. Yeah it could be hollowed but thats a risk that is taken. Though you really should knock on the cat to find out.

Part of inspecting is visual. It should have failed for that.
