"CD Error" SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE

I have a 2001 Sport Trac with an in dash 6 disc changer. Ok, I have read all the CD error threads I could find, but still no real help. It sticks like all the others...the door is stuck open, can't play, can't eject and says "CD ERROR" when I press anything.

I have removed the system, removed the faceplate, tried the knife thing by lifting it up while pressing eject...and on the advice of others, even tried to get the CD's out, to which I seriously destroyed 2 of them in hopes that it would free up the system to work and it DID NOT. Many say just to get a used system, which I can not afford right now.

So what I am asking is...HAS ANYONE SUCCESSFULLY fixed this haunting CD ERROR problem? If so, I would LOVE to know EXACTLY how. I am getting close to throwing this into the creek in my backyard! PLEASE HELP ME!

Throw it in the creek...

It'll probably swim back to you... The problem is that these factory stereos have issues. To fix them cost $$, it'll break again and you'll pay $$ - If you can't get another stereo right now, there aren't many options...

If you get it fixed, would you trust putting your good cds back in there? If you have to get it fixed you will need to weigh the cost of the repair estimate vs. another stereo.

Ok I did not read what others have said but here is what I did and it worked for me. I pulled out the unit and took off the top part of the unit- 4 or 6 screws. There are two wire plugs- take those off. Then just put it back together. It reset the whole system and I have not had a problem since I did that. Good luck and plet me know if this works for you. I can pull the unit out again if you need more details.

Welcome! Someone posted a repair service, if all else fails. Funny thing because back in the day car stereos lasted forever. You had good luck with yours... You might want to search for that repair service post, and add your comments - might come in handy.

I'd get it fixed. The radios are actually of good quality, and I hate the look of those ugly spacers to fit an aftermarket unit.

I paid a good deal to have my Premium unit repaired a while back. Added an iPod adapter and it does everything I need it to do and looks great.

did you do the physical adapter or the fm hook up? who'd you buy from? brand name of product? thanks!

I have one in the Explorer and one in my girlfriend's Sable. They work flawlessly and are worth the money!

To check compatibility push the CD button on your unit twice. If it flashes "NO DJ" or "NO CDDJ" then you're good to go. It will not work on 6 disc units.

There's a couple people here that know these OEM stereos pretty well, you are one of them. How come you don't chime in when we start bashing them? If you're right, you're right, that can't be argued away. I will eat crow anytime if needed, so if you have the know how, teach!

(And if anybody says the OEMs are crap, from now on, I'll point out that they can be repaired if willing)

And I'll stop the negative on the OEMs... If someone wants to hold on to the OEM, they should have every chance to do so.

Don and I are one of the few that like how the stock units function. He had a Mach unit sent out and RCA outputs added(standard 4 channels and a single sub out).

I try to chime in when I can, I can't always keep up with this site though, I help to moderate another Explorer forum and frequent quite a few other sites.

Your post reminded me about the 2002 Ex and all the problems they have... but we always look for solutions rather than just saying toss it. So, I kinda saw a double standard about OEM stereos. It if can be fixed when it breaks, fix it. Sounds fair, and I hope the poster takes your advice.

An aftermarket double din radio will fit perfectly into the stock opening. Just need to trim about 1/8" off in an area where you will never see it. My old 6 disc changer did the same "CD ERROR" thing, I had it fixed and thren sold it, because I wanted ipod controls and built in bluetooth capability.

1st time I took it to the dealer and they sent it off to some place in Kansas. I got it back a couple days later.

2nd time they had a refurbished unit in house and just swapped them out.

They have that in NJ too... an earlier poster asked about them. It turns out there's guy in NJ that specializes in repairing OEMs. I gotta find out who fixes them here... maybe we get a sticky posted of places to call for OEM repair (if it's not already here).
