I've never used one of those fancy scanners to get DTC's. I've always just used a jumper wire and a voltmeter/test light. I might suggest you try the "poor man's approach" just to see if the problem is with the truck or with the scanner.
Before I take the old girl in for a test, I plan to use the jumper wire method. Thanks to Brooklyn Bay's link with self-test codes and procedural info, I think my friend will be able to follow the instructions. That should eliminate any issues with his "fancy scanner."
