CEL Light On - No Codes Come Up

I've never used one of those fancy scanners to get DTC's. I've always just used a jumper wire and a voltmeter/test light. I might suggest you try the "poor man's approach" just to see if the problem is with the truck or with the scanner.

Before I take the old girl in for a test, I plan to use the jumper wire method. Thanks to Brooklyn Bay's link with self-test codes and procedural info, I think my friend will be able to follow the instructions. That should eliminate any issues with his "fancy scanner."

Thank you state of California and your emissions control!:thumbdwn:

I believe KAM is pin 1 on the PCM, but I'd have to check a wiring diagram for sure.

Tested and Have 214 Code

:(I had to go to two test centers in order for the code to come up. The first test at the repair shop could not come up with any codes and referred me to a smog diagnostic shop. The result is I have a code 214, cylinder identification (CID) circuit failure. I was told I need to change the cam sensor and housing but my Chilton doesn't mention a cam sensor. Chilton only mentions a crankshaft sensor. So, I don't know what I'm looking for or where it goes. Ford no longer makes a cam sensor. No surprise there. So, it's to the wrecking yards I go. I just need to know the correct part to replace.

Can you fellas tell me if I need to replace the cam sensor and housing? Also, is there a parts outlet online for used parts? I've tried local u-pull it places here and they don't usually have what I need.

Thanks for your patience with this old novice.:D

I've read almost everything related to a code 214 at this site. I'm more confused than ever. In my case, the CEL is constant. It never goes off and vehicle runs well. A day before I took it for the test, I disconnected the battery and took the computer out to see if the CEL was lit with the computer out and key on. Would that have given me a 214 code? Could I have a vacuum leak?

what you did above would not cause that code, nor would a vacuum leak.

the cam sensor is on the top rear of the engine.

is your 94 a California vehicle?? i know you live there but does the emission label under the hood say CA compliant?? also, verify that it is a 94 emission compliant vehicle (same sticker). 95 compliant Fed and CA vehicles have a cam sensor. 94 Fed compliant uses a Crank sensor.

I live in California and she's California smog compliant. Vehicle was first purchased in California with all the smog bells and whistles.

I purchased the cam position sensor, a bargain at $391. Kragan matched an online price, otherwise the cam sensor was $566. I'm taking it to the diagnostic shop tomorrow to have the part put in. I figured it was their diagnosis and if they're wrong, it should be on them. I was just very leary of spending $800 to have it fixed if it wasn't the cam sensor.

The ongoing saga should end tomorrow, if not I'll be back here posting my woes and asking for help.

You fellas are soooo helpful. I don't know where I'd be without you. Mostlikely where I was 3 years ago when I had her tested. Each time it was tested, I had to buy and replace more parts (final cost was approx. $800 for smog parts alone). That was just oxygen sensors, ignition module and such.

Thanks again to all of you for your help.
